Engine Color???

I'm going to have my engine out this weekend and I'm going to change all the gaskets and repaint because it just looks like crap. I have aluminum intake and valve covers but I'm really thinking about painting it all. But then I sober up and say paint the block orange and leave the aluminum. Maybe a black block.....I just don't know.....I'm scared.......Ok, I'm fine now.
Could you guys post some pics, especially engines other than the classic orange. Even though that is probably what I will do. Thanks

Re: Engine Color???

I was actually going to ask this same question this morning but I was too sleepy. I have a buddy with a 67 and he painted the block black. It looks good. I was think about going with black also. I just think that there are alot of orange blocks out there and I want something different.

Re: Engine Color???

Chevrolet engines were destined to be one color, and only ONE color ... ORANGE.

Unless, of course, you paint it body color.

I'm partial to CHEVY orange my self but it's your engine so do as you please. Orange engine with white headers looks real good. Thats just my opinion.

Re: Engine Color???

Beater69,
If your headers are sand blasted real good and put atleast 5 coats of VHT header paint on them it stands up real well. It is not a good thing for a daily driver but works well on a show car. My dad's headers on his '55 Chevy have been white for quite a few years with a recoat every couple years.

Re: Engine Color???

I went with the classic Chevy Orange with Black heads and pan plus aluminum intake and a few pieces of chrome. At least it will be when I get the pieces back together.

actually when the sbc came out zora wanted them to be red (a few were) but the board of GM made him change to orange because they didn't want to be seen as copying fords use of red with the thunderbird engines

Re: Engine Color???

I went black on my 454 for my 69 K20. Still liking it with the Silver truck color.

Just went orange on the 400 sbc for the 70 K5.

Maybe add some different valve covers at some point to break up the orange.

Re: Engine Color???

If I ever have the engine out and available, I will do a standard Chevy orange with Clear powder on my intake and valve covers (aluminum), then high temp flat black powder for the headers.

If I get new headers, I will shoot them before I install them.

I remember reading that back when I had my "plastic" car and doing some reading on my Duntov.

I have always associated Chevrolet with orange ... thus the reason for my prejudice.
