How to make it hook up????

I am contemplating swapping my current 350ci SB for a 468ci BB. What should I run in the 12Bolt? Can anyone recommend using a spool as opposed to limited slip differential? The LSD cost 3.5 times what I can get a spool for. Any thoughts????

Re: How to make it hook up???

If it's not a daily driver, I would go with a spool. But if it is a daily driver, plan on new tires more often. I used to run a spool in my 81 SWB, and went through tires like mad. Driving in town just torn them up with all the turning corners and such.

Re: How to make it hook up???

Spool will hook better but is gonna be a pain on the street. The best way to get it to hook up is probably a 4 link. However the basic rear suspension in these trucks (Coil spring) is used in NASCAR.

A GM 12 bolt posi with the upgrade clutches and springs will work. Believe me, I have twisted aftermarket axles with this setup and 14x31 slicks.

Its not a daily driver, but I drive quite heavily on the weekend. Prostreet what spool did you use? And does yours make that gawdawful popping sound that spools do? I had one in my 67 El Camino and it drove me nuts

Re: How to make it hook up???

Probably was the suspension "popping", as it will kind of get twisted when cornering, but then something it has to give way, or "slip". My 81 SWB use to pop, but it was to springs/perches and stuff getting twisted then POP back into place then twist again......

With a spool, you are literally dragging a tire around every corner.

Re: How to make it hook up???

If you run a spool on the street get some cheap narrow tires to run. I had a spool in my daily driver for about 11 months. Drove from Edgewater MD into Capital Hill DC everyday.(0 miles round trip, parallel parking was a pain though

What a great idea!
Could I see a picture of that set up from the front and back?

Re: How to make it hook up???

Why noy look into a drop in or lunch box locker like the 4x4 guys use? Just replace your side and spider gears and retain your current carrier and center pin . Should be a little more street friendly . A clutch type posi would be best IMO.

Re: How to make it hook up???

I ran a spool in my old 69 camaro. After breaking 2 axles making U turns I got rid of it. Too much hassle. You will end up spending more money on broken parts and tires than to get a good posi type unit.

Re: How to make it hook up???

you dont want a locker on a street truck, to irratic and jumpy, it wont launch as straight as you want for a pro street truck. either a spool or a posi but as said a spool is harsh for a dd nice truck, mean nasty street/strip racer its the ticket. posi is much much nicer and smoother but will give you a straighter launch and wont shoot you off at the wall. its much safer in ****y weather too, a spool can very easily get you wrecked.

i would run a spool but i was given a posi unit by a freind. my truck is also not and never will be any kind of show truck, just ugly and fast.

Re: How to make it hook up???

I have a mini spool in my 68 , it's a pain on the street , it actually behaves better with the slicks on . I would watch Evilbay for a Eaton posi , i got one new for $200 plus the ride ( Not installed yet ).

Re: How to make it hook up???

I bought an eaton posi off of ebay for $49 . The quirks that a locker has can be driven around on the streets , Coasting through corners squaring the truck off before accelerating .

If this is street driven in any way you do not want a spool.
The lock right is a cheap effective locker that will do the job and still allow you to turn with minimal wheel hop compared to a spool. Then you need to address weight transfer with your suspension to help keep force on the rear wheels.
