Swapping 1992 5 speed/transfer case into 72 ?
I am building a 1972 1/2 ton 4x4 4 speed truck and may have the oportunity to get a 1992 1/2 ton 4WD truck from my brother in law real cheap. It has a 5 speed transmission that is making lots of noise when its in gear but quits when you push the clutch in. I'm thinking it might just need a new throwout bearing and clutch plate. Although it does have 300,000 miles on it! How hard are these to rebuild and how difficult of a swap is this ? My truck has the body off now and this is the time to make changes. Thanks for the help.

Check with the $x$ forum, I think a couple of guys have done the swap. Plus somebody here did a faq with pictures on a 2wheel drive. Follow what they did and use the transfercase crossmember in the 72

well right off the bat you have a serious compatability issue, '92+ chevy any thing is a drivers side tcase and '91 v subs/blazers and '87 v p/u are all passenger side tcases and axles. chevy never made a d-side solid axle truck so you are either going to have to use a ford axle or a older tcase.

it can be done but it will cost you, advanced adapters should have the stuff you need.

Re: Swapping 1992 5 speed/transfer case into 72 ?
You want to make sure that is a NV4500 tranny. If it's not then it's going to be a waste of money IMHO. Seeing that you parts truck is a 1/2 ton I think you might have a one-piece Getrag 5 sp there. Also called a M-5 something or other... They don't hold up to towing/hard 4 wheeling very well and they are 7-900 bucks to replace when they die. No one will rebuild them so you have to buy another from a dealer or junk yard. I have be there-done that with a 91 K10 I owned a few years back. The NV 4500 5 speed is the one you really want, found in 92 & up 3/4 & 1 tons.

So I guess its really not worth trying. I don't have unlimited $ I will probably buy the truck anyway and just fix it and use it. Thanks for the help

Re: Swapping 1992 5 speed/transfer case into 72 ?
OK I bought the truck. It runs and drives great, pretty rough though, Anyway The tranny sounds like it is going to fly apart at any minute. Talked to a transmission shop and they told me the same thing you guys did, very expensive ! So my kid comes home today and says he found me a transmission, or should I say another truck with a 5 speed in it. The truck is an 88-92 shortbed 2WD SS that is running and driveable even though it has been rolled. The transmission works fine. Is this the same transmission thats in the 4WD that I have ? If so I can buy the complete truck for $300 - $400 and take the tranny and part out the rest of it. Thanks
