Help with rear bumper
Just got my new rear bumper installed. I'm not sure if my brackets are bent, the new bumper is bent, or something else. Can the brackets be adjusted other than bending? I don't see the bolt holes being slotted or anything. Can someone post a picture of a stock bumper, and how it lines up? Here is what mine looks like now.

Re: Help with rear bumper
One thing is that those repop bumpers and licence brackets tend to warp the bumper up in the middle, your licence bracket is pulling the ends of the bumper down, making it high in the middle. I have had better luck on the repop tri-plus bumpers using a GM licence plate bracket, still available, they used the same rear one thru 1987. That is where I would start. Maybe the rear of the box needs be moved a little to the passenger side ? Make sure the bumper brackets don't have high spots where they touch the bumper, or they will put dents in the bumper when you tighten the bolts.

Re: Help with rear bumper
loosen EVERY thing up pull down on passenger side and push up on driver side to try and get better alignment// if you can't align that way try switching brackets side for side//
the bumper should be sitting lower than what you have on the passenger side you're also missing the splash shields that go on top the bumper braces

Re: Help with rear bumper
Yeller68,
I had to buy new rear bumper brackets when I bought my bumper and everything bolted up real good. It looks like the pass. side is a little close and the drivers side is out way too far and down. It almost looks like the drivers side brackets are in the wrong holes in the frame. Maybe both sets of brackets are for the pass. side? There has to be an easy explanation all you have to do is figure it out....... Anyway, I've included a couple of pics of mine. LockDoc

Re: Help with rear bumper
Thanks for all the replies. Especially the pics. That shows me what I need to be shooting for. The only thing repop here is the bumper. The license bracket and bumper brackets the originals off the truck. I think I'll go for a new set of brackets. Another question on the splash shields, are they supposed to be body color, or something else?
About to finish up the outside, and start on the interior.... |

Re: Help with rear bumper
I just left mine black. I'm not sure what they were originally.

Re: Help with rear bumper
matthufham,
I read your thread. Looks like you bought after market brackets? My brackets are original on the truck, so I'm thinking that sometime in the past the truck must have been slightly rearended just enough to bend the brackets. When I can get the time, i'm going to try a combo of bending the brackets, slotting the bolt holes, and get mine lined up. Pics were a big help showing me where it needs to go. BTW, went and looked at your build pics. Great job there. You've done a lot of work on your truck, and it shows. |

Re: Help with rear bumper
The splash shields were usually body color. And once again, I LOVE that truck!!! Even the correct hub caps!!
