ash tray removal problems

I am so afraid I'm going to look stupid asking this one...

Four fasteners removed from Ash tray housing

2 up under the slide opening and 2 outer fasteners on the lower side

- it will not budge - are ther spot welds???

- now is your formal invitation to make me look stupid

Re: ash tray removal problems

Talk about dumb... I just took mine out a couple of weeks ago and I'll be damned if I can remember. I thought there was just the four screws. Does the radio brace fasten to the back of it? Unless someone else answers I will check mine out in the morning....

LockDoc

I couldn't stand it, I had to go look. There are four screws, two at the top of the ashtray opening and two above the heater control behind the dash.... I don't know if you can get to the ones behind the dash without taking the heater control out or not. Nothing else that fastened to mine.

Re: ash tray removal problems

I don't think there are any spot welds because I removed mine back during the first part of the year. I can't remember how exactly I removed it but there were no spot welds. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Re: ash tray removal problems

The answer is.... drum roll ....

I slightly separated the ash tray from the dash panel until it showed two spot welds right beside the upper screw holes - figure that one out - masking taped the dash off and hit it with a die grinder - fell out...

It was factory welds too, the original paint was up in the fitment of each.

Re: ash tray removal problems

Ah yes I have seen a few spot welded. I found them on a janesville truck. pita to remove. I think I also had to do it on a couple of st louis trucks to. Is yours an a/c truck? All that I have found spot welded were a/c trucks. Hope this helps.

Re: ash tray removal problems

My 71 non/ac is spot welded, but i had a 71 non a/c that wasn't, a 70 with a/c that was not, and a 72 non a/c that wasn't. Maybe the assembly plant made the call?
