a few questions regarding steering gears and 3/4 ton frames.
ok heres my questions.
ive got a P/S box from a 69/70 3/4ton on my 68 halfton. it steers ok.. but its a slow ratio and i want to quicken it up. a lot. i was wondering- can a guy take just the gears out of say, a camaro box, and put them into our box? that would be pretty sweet. next question. is there any difference between actual frames from a halfton 2wd and a 3/4ton 2wd? cause the thing is, ive got 2 swb frames (one will be for sale eventually) and i am planning on stretching my cab a bit..originally i was gonna hack them both up to make one longer one, but i realized it would be RETARDED to sacrifice 2 good swb frames from the world if i could just shorten a lwb one. so ive GOT a 3/4 ton frame (front cab mounts back anyway) and was wondering if it would be worth it to use that frame, if its actually any stronger, cause id still have to shorten it under the cab, add t-arms, t-arm crossmember, spring pockets, shock mounts.. and attach a front clip.. which would pry be halfton rated anyway. OR should i just find a halfton 2wd lwb frame and go from there?? MAN maybe i just answered my own question..!! any suggestions greatly appreciated though... |

The 3/4ton frame is the same as the 1/2 ton frame. Just a few extra braces & the rear cab mount sits lower for the taller rubber cab bushing.

Re: a few questions regarding steering gears and 3/4 ton frames.
Supper - If you are working with 2wd here is one way to go. The 69-72 steering box is about 4 1/2 turns lock to lock. The 73 and up box is about 3 1/2 turns lock to lock. I would recommend the 73+ box.
I have often thought about swapping Camaro/TransAm internals into a truck box. I think an IROC would be the quickest. You would have to tear one down to see if it work. Keep us posted - Bob

cool. i thought that the frames werent any different strength wise.. so that confirms that- and as far as the steering box, i had considered just using a newer one, but some camaro gears would be the ULTIMATE!

Re: a few questions regarding steering gears and 3/4 ton frames.
You could try calling the Tech hotline for ATSCO remanufacturing. I have done this before. I talked to micheal, 1-800-470-2387 ext. 169. I told him exactly what i already had. Gearbox casting numbers, inlet spline count, lock-to-lock count. Then told him what i wanted. Gave him a day and called him back and he gave me part numbers to go to my local supplier with. Very helpful service.
He probably will not need any of the casting info in your application as it is all stock parts right now. Please post what you learn Jason |
