What's everyone use to paint the needles on the speedo / tach , etc ? Also what do you use to clean up / remove scratchs on the gage plastic thingy ?
Gotta go , my kid's yelling at me to get off the computer , aaargh .

Re: 72 Dash rebuild
About 8 years ago when i restored my 81 stepside, I was still in the navy, so i "borrowed" some photoluminescent paint (glow in the dark) from my ship.
I painted all the needles in my cluster, so at night if i turned off the dash lights, all you would see were the needles glowing. IMHO, it was really cool

I don't know where you would find the paint... the paint came in three parts, and i don't remember any brand listed on the label. plus the navy doesn't use it anymore, since they shifted to photo luminecent stickers, but that's not to say it can't be found in a warehouse someplace. maybe there's a navy guy here that wouldn't mind checking with the hazmat people at his command.

Re: 72 Dash rebuild
I used a real fine polish to get the scratches out of my lense. I used the middle polish in I think a maquires 3 part detail solution. I remeber it came in a maroon squirt bottle. Use bottle 2 and it should come out real nice. I second the testors paint. Works wanders on old faded needles.

Re: 72 Dash rebuild
Toothpaste works wonders on clear plastic.
use a little bit of water, and a paper towel. Plus everyone should have some on hand.

Re: 72 Dash rebuild
with the tooth paste! I have used it for fine scratches for years in paint and plastic. It really does a good job and you find out that different brands have different abrasive levels.

remove the plastic lens, squeeze a little toothpaste on the area to be polished, add some water (i usually just run it under the faucet quickly) then use a rag or paper towel and polish evenly in circular motion. then rinse and repeat until clear. do both sides and you should have a nice clear lense again.

Re: 72 Dash rebuild
All done , ended up using Eagle One Nevr - Dull on the plastic , mainly cuz i had it in the shop . It's basically jewelers rouge soaked cotton ( wadding ) and for the pointers i bought some Testors Neon Orange #1173 . Worked out great , it was an exact match for speedo/tach/fuel gage , etc . At first it looked a little too orange in the bottle , but was fine .
Thanks for the help , i think i'll renew the 68 dash next . Doug.
