Headers after engine swap?

I swapped my 250 for a 307 using all of the factory mounts, didnt move the engine forward. It is a 3 spd on the column and the clutch hits the header I have on there now that I got from the junkyard. Which header should I use and the size also. I searched but did not find the answer I was looking for. THanx for the help.

Re: Headers after engine swap?

I have Hooker comps (#2452)on mine, & have also run Hedman (69090), but my linkage is a little different than you have. You might try building a new top clutch rod with Rod ends , & heat the arm on the bellcrank, to bend it away from the headers. Im not sure how much room you need to gain to clear the tubes.....but if its not a bunch it should work. the other thing you may need to do is open up the hole in the firewall a tad to clear the new rod. If that dont work, I can tell you how to set it up with Hookers, or Hedmans best of luck L

Re: Headers after engine swap?

on my 72 jimmy, the headers said they work with manual tranny, but the clutch linkage still hit, i had to re design the whole linkage, as for the ammount of offsets and other things so it would rotate and clear, you can always switch to a hydro clutch...

Did the same thing (350) on my ole '72, and bought Headman Headers for the year & MT, and they fit great. Too bad they don't fit on my current 4X4...

Re: Headers after engine swap?

Is that clutch linkage from a 67 ? I think 68 and up V8 use an offset linkage that will help clear the headers. I bought one from Billsbowtie a while back to use on our 1970 when we put headers on it. The current linkage we have looks just like yours and is from a 1967. They should be pretty easy to find.

Here is a pic of the offset linkage :

Re: Headers after engine swap?

Im not positive because that is the linkage that was on the truck when I got it. It might be different between a 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder on the linkage that is.

Re: Headers after engine swap?

Yes there are some differences between the 6 and 8 linkages, but it really does not matter what is on theer now, if you get an offset linkage from a v8 like in the picture, it will bolt right right on give a lot more clearance.

Hooker recomends bending the linkage on a 67 to get it to clear, but I prefer to use a factory offset linkage if possible. Maybe some other brands will clear
but the offset linkage will likely give more room with any header.
