72 Key Question
Does my 72 use 2 keys , one square one for the ignition and one round one for the doors or ??? My key is so thin i'm a little nervous to try it in the door , with my luck i'd break it off .
Also what h.p. would you think a stock '75 454 is ? Would it respond well to a cam change and some head work , or are they just a low compression dog ? Tks ................................ 409

Re: 72 Key Question
One key fits the ignition and the doors as original.
75 454 would be a low compression engine, but yes, you can make some seriouse power even on an 8 to 1 motor. |

Re: 72 Key Question
-
My book shows same key for doors & Ignition. I would take the key to a locksmith shop and see if they can decode it and cut you a new one to factory specs. If there is a series of numbers and letters stamped on the head of the key that would be the code number and they can cut you a new key from that. Home centers and hardware stores can't do it. The numbers stamped on the key would be between 00N0-99N9 or 00P0-99P9. Those are the key code series for '72. LockDoc

Re: 72 Key Question
Thanks guys , on that key thing i seem to remember an old locksmith here in town telling me to pull the pass. side door lock and they can get the nbrs off of that . I can't remember why it was pass not driver's side . And i could be mistaken . Any nbrs that may have been on the ign key are long gone ,the key must be the original it's worn down to nothing .
Later .................................... Doug

Re: 72 Key Question
just go to the hdwr store and ask them to coppy your original key. If it don't work, you don't pay. No money lost, and you may just save the time and PITA of ripping apart your door panel.
That's what I'd do... but I'm lazy too. |

Re: 72 Key Question
Just go get a "trace" copy made at Home Depot or Napa or somewhere. They should be able to follow the original pattern and it will only cost a couple $.

Re: 72 Key Question
The biggest (I think) power increase you can get from a BBC is making it flow better. Bigger cam to open them valves more and keep 'em open longer. Porting the heads will definitly be noticeble. And a good set of full length headers.

Your old locksmith is correct, the code is usually on the passengers side. I would recommend taking the lock out and taking it to him to get the key cut. If your key is that worn you are going to be wasting your time getting another one cut off of it. After you get done chasing to the hardware store two or three times you'll still have to pull out the lock cylinder to get a key that works correctly. Just my 2¢ worth.... LockDoc
