4X4 front drive shaft.
I was poking around under the truck greasing every thing that had a fitting on it yesterday and when I grabbed the front drive shaft, it moved side to side. The CV joint at the transfer case is tight as is the U joint at the axle, the play is at the slip joint. I suspect there probably shouldn't be any side to side play there. What to do to correct the problem? Replace whole shaft or is there another fix?

Sounds like there is some wear in the slip yoke. Unless there is a huge amount, I wouldnt worry about it. Just grease it and go. If its real bad, take your shaft to a drive line shop and have them redo the end that is worn. Shouldnt cost more then 100.00 $ to rebuild your shaft.

driveshaft
I have a Really tight front driveshaft that i would sell you. No play at all. It has a Cv joint off of a different model NP205 on it, so you would need to swap your cv joint onto it. 50 plus mail if you are interested. let me know

The slip joints in the front drive shafts tend to wear out pretty fast. You can either get a new shaft, or take yours to a drive line shop and have a new slip joint installed. Gotta keep grease in those things.

Do you wheel a lot? If not i wouldnt worry about it to much. I wheel every weekend and have broken about 20 front drive shafts. It doesnt matter if they are a little loose. I have a 72 gmc 1/2 ton and run a 510 inch BB. Its my opinion but i also feel that cv joints are very weak. I have 6 inches of suspension lift and heavy duty u-joints have been a lot more dependable to me.
