Should I fix my cab, or buy one ready to go?

My '72 needs the usual- rockers, supports, corners, some floor work, doors, fenders, wells. The only thing I have that is nice is a pair of doors. I found a guy that has a cab (a/c cab) & doors that were dipped, media blasted & primed. New rockers & cab corners done. Says the doors were nice & needed no repairs. Comes with NOS fenders, wells & radiator support. He wants $1800. I'm thinkin that is a decent deal, & would save me a lot of work & headache redoing mine. By the time I buy fenders & wells, all the work... wouldn't this be the way to go if his cab was done right & everything is as stated?

Help me out... plenty of you have "done this or that wish i wouldda" stories!

You also need to think about all the man hours to get it done. It does sound like a good deal

You know, it sounds like a lot of money but if you sit down and figure up all the stuff you need, plus $5 an hour for your time you will be way better off buying the finished parts. Plus you will be a lot closer to being back on the road in a short time.

I'd take it - that is a smokin' deal and I would take it if I were in your shoes. Knowing all of the things that I could use to do on my cab, and seeing half the crap that guys around here do that I would never want to do, you just can't beat a deal like that, especially when you consider the add'l work and money you need to put into dipping and media blasting.

Just make sure the work has truly been done and been done right.

I'm really leaning towards it. It's an 800 mile round-trip road trip in my 12 mpg pickup, but I think it would be worth it. I've seen a few pics, but nothing of the underside of the cab. I'm going to quiz the guy more on it tomorrow. I can't imagine anyone doing the dip & blast, all the pricey NOS parts to turn around and do a shoddy job on the cab repair. Considering I don't even have a garage for this project, and that my buddy's place & welder is 2 hours away- it sure would be quick & easy to have someone trim out the cab & parts so I can start bangin' it all together in my yard this spring.

A road trip is cool every now and then. A few years ago I was buildin a 50 Chevy pickup and drove to Portland, Or to get a parts truck. 13 hrs each way.

it's right up the road from me, but i only want the cab. already have new fenders and doors, so i won't be bidding.

If you want, i might be able to swing over there and check it out for you.

That is a very nice offer and just what this board is known for! It does sound like a good deal if the work was done right. I put that much time into the same cab repairs with out blasting or dipping!

Just an opinion, I do paint and body work ,amongst other things, for a living, and I will tell you this....I would not touch doing the work that has been done to that cab and parts for even close to that dollar amount! I say If you value your time and your money, you will be way ahead. If the parts are what they say they are, GO FOR IT!!!!

I talked to the guy on the phone. Sounds like everything was done right, but I did find out a few things, that he didn't mention until I asked:

1- It is a "low hump" 2wd cab. I'm sure it will work fine with my 3 in. body lift, but I was considering taking the body lift out. That would shut down that idea.

2- One door has a speaker hole in it. He didn't seem to remember 'til I asked about it a few times. He went out & looked to find out. I guess I could fix it, or just put speakers in.

3- the fuel fill has been filled- which is ok with me if done right, I want my gas tank out of the cab anyway.

4- It has a new A/C evaporator, & he would likely throw in all the interior A/C stuff including a control panel with new cables.
