problem with fuel or carb set up

I recently switched from points to a HEI dist. I have a 250 and used the info off of this board. It went well except i can't get the truck to run If i poor gas in the carb it will start up and run until the gas is used up. I thought of a fuel line problem. I took the tank out and used my air compresser to clean out the fuel line, sending unit and fuel pump, I even replaced the fuel filter. The carb was a rebuild from auto zone and worked when I installed it. The problem is there is no fuel when the gas pedel is pressed. Is the change from points to HEI affecting the vacum lines? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: problem with fuel or carb set up

disconnect fuel ine from carb crank over engine see if its pumping gas if not// you might have an empty fuel tank OR bad fuel pump OR clogged or broken fuel line check under the pass side cab theres a short piece of rubber hose it may be dryrotted and or kinked

The HEI swap should'nt have had any effect on the fuel and if it will run when you pour gas in the carb, I'd pull the line loose at the carb and see if fuel is making to there, if so then you have a float problem in the carb otherwise I'd say replace the fuel pump.

Re: problem with fuel or carb set up

How would I know if the fuel sending unit isn't sending fuel to the fuel pump?

the fuel tank sending unit just reads the fuel level in the tank..and the voltage is read at the fuel gauge in your dash...has nothing to do with your carb not getting gas...hope you get it worked out

Re: problem with fuel or carb set up

Does it by chance have an electric fuel pump that got disconnected when you hooked up the distributor?

Re: problem with fuel or carb set up

I'd say probably...
1...bad rebuilt carb. Float stuck at top.
2...bad fuel pump.

I've had both issues happen to my stuff in the past. Luckily, they did not happen at the same time.

If by chance there is an electric fuel pump there, compressed air "should" not make it to the fuel tank, as there is a check valve in most I've seen that will prevent backflow. Did you hear the air "gurgling" in the tank?

It is a mechanical fuel pump. the pump is not working. I will replace and see where i stand.
