If Performance is King, I'd set the timing at about 34 to 36 degrees total advance and then increase the octane in the gas I buy until the pinging stops. Or, if money is King of the Equation, run 87 Octane/regular and retard the timing 1 or 2 degrees at a time until the pinging stops. If it only pings on occasion/under unusual circumstances, then I'd leave things as is and let it ping once in a while. JMO.
