Brake Light Wiring Q

My brake lights are out. My blinkers still work. I have looked under the dash and it's a nightmare. Splices from h*ll. It has trailer brake and trailer plugin, all spliced right under the steering column. I'll eventually clean all this crap out, but I'm sending my truck back with my son to college, and I'm looking for a quick fix.
Coming off the pedal switch, I want to splice another line and then tie in further back on the 4wire harness. Do I need to tap into both blinker wires? What colors are they?
I know it's "mickey mouse", but I'm working night shift tonight and he'll be taking the truck tomorrow. Doesn't help that I'll have to do this in the parking lot with a flashlight. It's a little warmer tonight. I don't think it below 10 F.
Thanks, Al

I think I would check the brake light switch. See if you have power to it. If you don't, hook a jumper to the + side of it and see if the brake lights work. If they still don't work hook the jumper to the wire that goes from the brake light switch to the brake lights to bypass the switch.

Do you have tail lights or dome light?

I presume you checked the fuse, it is separate from the hazard lights.

Just some things to try.

Re: Brake Light Wiring Q

Being as the brake and blinkers are on different fuses, I would start there, check and make sure the button isn't stuck on the brake light switch also.
I don't think you can tie the brake lights into the rear light wires further back without defeating the blinking function, the turn signal switch separates the functions. I have had the fuse to show power to both sides till I turned something on, if the fuseholder is rusty it can break contact with the fuse under a load.
Hope this helps,
Max

Re: Brake Light Wiring Q

if the brake light switch is good, and getting power, then odds are it is a bad turn signal switch.

Re: Brake Light Wiring Q

I've checked the fuse, it's good and the dome light works. I have power into the switch, but I have not jumped it to see if the switch is bad. The white wire coming out of the switch has 3 of those blue clipon splices. I've had trouble with those things everywhere I've seen them.
Longhornman- My blinkers work just fine. Could the turn signal switch still be the problem? I have another column with a newer TS switch that I could change out if I have to.
Thanks for the tips all.

Re: Brake Light Wiring Q

Worst case, stop at Wal-mart on your way home and pick up a set of the magnetic trailer lights. Wire 12V to one side of your brake switch, and the other side to the lights

Re: Brake Light Wiring Q

I've got lights! For 6 months I've been driving this truck without them. I live in east egypt, so it's not a big deal, but still.....It took all of 5 minutes to fix! Unplugged the pedal switch and jumped it. My lights came on. Scratched up the mating surfaces and plugged it back in and wala. Thanks again for the help.

Glad you got it sorted. With electrical, the solution is usually simple but finding the problem is a pain in the a$$.....
