Kinda off the wall

Has anyone ever tried/heard of putting a wood bed in our Blazers? Don't know what it would do to the structural integrity.

Re: Kinda off the wall

Doesn't sound that off the wall to me!!! It's not all that hard, if you change to the '73 and up rear crossmember. Everything else just sorta bolts up. J.

Re: Kinda off the wall

Jim, saw your thread and really liked what I saw. Couple of questions though, first off has it weakened the integrity of the vehicle? That is my major concern going from a sheet of steel to a bunch of wood bolted together. Second do you have any more pictures especially of the rear cross member and exactly what you had to do to make it fit. Yours really came out nice, must have something to do with "Semper Fi". Two sons in Corp., one over there now.

Re: Kinda off the wall

Dave first off, you must be a very proud father, congrats. you've done well!!! God bless, you and your sons will be in my prayers. I've had children in harms way and it can be tuff on the parents, any time you want to talk just shout...

Right now I'm off to Buffalo, so I can't answer many questions, but when I get back I'll take any shots you want.

As far as integrity goes I guess I'll find out on the trails, it seems to work on the pickups, although I haven't seen any trail really hard with a wood bed.

I guess we have to do a strenght/stress analyst test j/k
I believe it should be strong enuff, its oak. if it fails I'll just go with a stronger wood. Thats the great part aboot it, easy to fix once installed, no more rusty bed syndrome.

Gotta Shuffle off to Buffalo, and Have a Happy New Year, Jim

Thanks for the comps. guys

Re: Kinda off the wall

Dave here are some pics

In the first pic, you can see that I cut a 3/4" section off the top of the crossmember so it would fit under the side supports, then welded in place. All the holes line up for the SS strips, for some reason.
Underneath at the hockey puck I had to cut out a 3/8" slot to clear the frame. The only other mod. I had to do was lenghten the holes on the wheelhouses since it now sits up 3/4" higher

Re: Kinda off the wall

this is funny. i was just wondering about this as well. makes me think about that ford cheif concept truck, where they made it reminiscent of old luxury railroad cars...

Probably a normal person could install it in a couple days!! Me, it toke 6 months, thinking, planning, ....
Hardest part was getting the old steel bed out, I didn't want to screw up my crossmembers. That toke 3 months on and off, but I was playing with other parts of my truck.
Thanks for the comps. J.
