Gear drives…

Anyone recommend a brand- or not recommend a certain brand?

What brand is the loudest and which it the least?
My motor is mostly stock, but I like the way they wine. (not sure if I want one that's too loud though.)

They are all loud ... even the "quiet" ones.

The "cool factor" wears off very very fast and becomes incredibly annoying. I wouldn't recommend one for a daily driver.

I put a Proform in my wife's '68 and it is noticeable but not loud. I think it sounds great and not annoying at all.

I got that one, along with the rest of the guts, from Northern Auto Parts. Their prices are really hard to beat.

im going to go with a gear drive to..let me know hwat you think of yours and where you got it..i figure it cant be any worse than the tranny i got the howls and growls at me now..i just turn the radio up another notch..

Norther parts didn’t list the proform gear drive, but I fount the site on Google. Found a local dealer in Albuquerque and will give them a call. I’ll also look into how noisy it is.

Edelbrock (#7890) and Dynagear both offer good gear drives for a reasonable price. Both with straight-cut teeth. From what I understand, Pete Jackson used to offer a kit with angle-cut teeth for a slightly quieter sound. Another factor is the cam-line to crank-line relation of your block. Some vary just slightly and the closer together they are, the louder the gear noise.

After looking into this more, I decided not to do the gear drive. Although the noise is what I liked it sounds like it will get old in a hurry.
So I inquired about a new chain system too. I’ve decided to get a stock timing chain system. Nothing fancy just a stock setup. The reason for this is because of the mileage on the engine now (116k). I’ll just wait until I redo the engine for the double roller unit or possibly a gear drive - after I hear some in the meantime.

LOVED my gear drive in my 68 camaro. it got driven alot after being put back together and i neve got tired of it. i will also be putting a PETE JACKSON in my bb 71 i have now "if" i ever get to the point of putting a new cam/lifters in.

when i finally rebuild my engine im gona be putting in a gear drive i love the sound but i heard that they take away horsepower is this true?? and if so how much do they take away??

I have the Eddelbrock noisy gear drive and its loud. My truck isn't a daily driver so I love it. Never heard that they rob horsepower.

My brother has a gear drive in his 65, it was cool for awhile. I have read somewhere that gear drives on daily drivers can have problems with harmonics (vibration problems) that can cause stress on the drivetrain. If I ever come across it I will post it up. It was pretty interesting. I did a quick google search but didnt find it.

I used to do a lot of V8 swaps in toyota 4x4s ( hence the CHEVOTA in skchevota) on the one I built four my self I used a pete jackson Quiet gear drive , I loved it. All though it could of been just the hole truck together that I loved, somthing about smoken 35"s on a detroit locked dana60 in a lifted rice truck with a heathy TPI 350 growling and a geardrive whineing going sideways down the street that gets my blood pumping. I do belive I miss that truck. any way I loved the gear drive...tobad I dont have any more V8s...although there is the old moter home in storage,hmmmmm.

If ya get the gear drive, be sure to get a torrington bearing for behind the gear drive. It protects the block from wear. Oh... and be sure you get a cam button - preferably roller to keep the gear from 'walking' your cam to far out of the block.
