Correcting Steering Wheel Location

After swapping front axles I didn't line up the steering wheel before re-installing the pitman arm. The wheel center is up and down now instead or side to side.
I tried pulling the pitman arm back off, straightening the wheel, locking the ignition then re-installing the pitman arm but the wheel is still off. Didn't seem to gain anything.
That was a pain to do by myself so I am wondering if there is an easier way to strighten the wheel back out?

Re: Correcting Steering Wheel Location

I am going to assume this is a 4x4 you are talking about. If it is, get the front wheels lined up sqaure to the truck, loosen the ends on the drag link from the pitman arm to the steering knuckle and turn the drag link. I think you have to jack up the front end to get this too work. I has been a couple of years since I have done this, so I am a little fuzzy on it. Hope this helps.

Re: Correcting Steering Wheel Location

I am in the same situation with mine. I put a different year stock wheel on and it is 90 degrees off. I was thinking all I had to do was jack it up, center the tires, disconnect the pitman arm from the steering box, center the steering wheel and reinstall the pitman arm BUT given my track record I would end up messing it up even more. I did a search a few days ago but didnt come up with anything too revealing.

Re: Correcting Steering Wheel Location

dswancutt,
Yes, 4x4.
I will take a look when I get home to see if this makes sense to me.
Thanks for the info!

BowTieOgre,
I searched under "steering" and stopped looking after the 3rd or 4th page.
