3 on the tree to floor shift.
Hi I am switching my three on the tree to a floor shift and was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the lower shift bars on the collum.

Take a grinder and cut them off flush and wrap it, that is what I did. Looks like to much a PIA to take the whole thing apart and you can barely notice it.

ok i figured it would have to be something like that how di you do the hole up top on it, Did you just jb weld it closed, I just ground off the nub that the shifter was attached to and now i have a hole.

I should have thought of grinding that off! Damn. Anyway, I painted it while it was out and left the nub on the shaft. You can't really tell when it's installed and it doesn't bother me and I'm not going for a show winner, just a clean Sunday afternoon tire roaster. If I was going for show, I'd just replace it.
One thing you should do while you have the shaft out is shorten the column. This will move the steering wheel closer to the dash and give you way more room. I ended up shortening mine while it was out, it looks like it's going to be nice with it closer to the dash. Can't tell right now since the cab is stripped, but the one time I drove it, I did notice that the wheel was out kind of far. There is a FAQ about how to do it. I had to heat mine to get it to move. I'll see if I can locate the link. |

Yea I just took the wheel and signal houseing off and slip a pice of aluminum behind the hole and then jb welded it and now im waiting for it to harden so I can sand it smooth. I'll have to look into shortening it but cant I just adjust the slide shaft and mount the colum a little closer to the dash rather than shortening it?.

I decided to take my colum the rest of the way apart to make it a shifter less colum. Pic 1 I took the 3/4 nut off i pulled the steering wheel off with the horn assembly still attached( mine is broken). Pic 2 I took the three screws from around the signal cam and removed the signal housing.Pic 3 (kinda blurry but it is the other end of the coulum and i took the two small bolts from the sides and took a bolt out of a clamp that held the steering shaft in the shaft loose and slid the shaft out then there is a second shaft thet the steering one goes threw that is used for the shifter that i had to tap out then I cut the shift taps off the end and ground them smooth (its to the left of pic 4). Still waiting for the jb weld to finish hardening before I put back together but will finish later today or tomarrow.

I cut the shift tabs of mine when I converted to automatic. Also shortened it, all you have to do is collapse the intermediate shaft halfway and cut a new slot in the column. here's the link
