I'm a new member looking for opinions on inexpensive carb replacement for daily driver 327ci engine in a 71 C-10. Something that needs almost no adjustment out of the box and has a good reliability. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I find Edelbrock to have the best OUT OF THE BOX carbs. You must remove the idle screws hoxever and blow a little air through the passages. For some reason the seem to have filings in them all the time. My favorite is still the Quadrajet but to get a good rebuilt one seems few and far between.

NAPA sells a replacement Q-jet I think... any spreadbore carb will work (600-650cfm) but will need a little tuning. is it an auto or manual? is it manual choke or electric (or divorced?) 2bbl or 4 bbl? all these will matter when you go for your replacement. Anything but Q-jet is going to require a new fuel line from pump (if you have original metal line now)...

Set up will be auto 350 trans, 4bbl stock manifold, electrdizzy, and ??? choke. Thanks.

maybe post a notice that you need to have a qjet rebuilt by a member in your area ( if you cannot do it yourself ) and it would be the best way. Lots of capable members in my opinion

takes close pics of all sides of your surrent setup (without air cleaner) and the board can tell you what you have and a better recommendation. If it's stock intake then you are looking for "spreadbore" carbs (not many Holley's made like that) but the Edelbrocks are. Lots of guys like the 1406 and it can adapt to a lot of installs. You can also upgrade to electric shoke but some like manual (with cable) divorced choke is manual by way of a coil spring on top of the intake....

This has been discussed quite a bit on the board, but completely agree with Cooters. I've always been a Holley guy, but the only Holley I'd put in this class are the Street Avenger carbs.

The new carb will replace holley economy carb which the owner said was not working when i bought the engine (1968 327ci) I have heard that the Edelbrock is a good bolt-up and go carb. SPREAD bore and SQUARE bore?? What is the difference?? I need it to bolt to stock '68 intake. Also, does the fact that I will run elec distributor mean I can do electric choke? Thank you.

I'd have a tendency to say rebuild what's there, but more information on the carb would be great. Spread bore has smaller primaries and larger secondaries which generally provides better around-town fuel economy...if you don't have a heavy right foot or an engine build level that has you in the secondaries at cruise. The stock '68 intake is MOST LIKELY a spread-bore manifold; adapters are available but I generally don't recommend them. You can do an electric choke at any time - it just takes an ignition-hot wire.

I'd say rebuild what you have - even sending it off to Holley or an online rebuilder.

I say go with an edelbrock 1406 with electric choke. Throw it in on and your done. Pretty much set your idle and your done. I would adjust the idle screws for highest vacuum also but that is it. They are out of the box dependable. Good luck.

i just bought "yesterday infact" a 625 road demon. i have yet to install it but i decided on it because everything i've read on demon has been positive. holly on the other hand got tons of bad reveiws. why, i don't know but alot of it had to do with having to tune it ALL the time.
