Arrow Repair or replace-tailgate

My tailgate on my swb 4x4 is in pretty good shape,no dents or anything ,a little surface rust but one area towards to bottom has some small pin-holes.I would like to keep it considering how good of shape it is in except for the pin holes and dont like repos because they arent nearly as good as original. So,what do you think, repair or replace?
One pic is a over-all pic of the tailgate, other is the rust area

Re: Repair or replace-tailgate

I hate to say it dustin but replace. Any thing you do to it will just buy you a couple more years before it really starts to spread. The one off my orange and white is straight but has pin holes and now larger rust holes in an otherwise straight gate to. From what I have read on here if you get it with the letters you should be good. It may be worth a drive north to gmcpauls to look at one and compare.

I'd say try and save it. It looks to be pretty straight and not warped like most are. As long as you have enough solid metal above the holes without hitting the letter (the "H" I think) I'd go for it. Just my two cents.

Re: Repair or replace-tailgate

pin holes? what kinda pin, hitch pin For the price of a good OEM gate I would fix those areas and drive on if your budget isn't right for one now. My gate is bent like a banana so I am in the same boat.... I can always pull the old gate if I run into a better one.

The one drawback I see with "fix it/run it/replace it later" is in trying to get exact paint match later on. If that isn't a #1 concern, I'd say fix it. It looks TONS straighter'n mine, but that's another story...

Re: Repair or replace-tailgate

Well,I am planning on paiting the truck before the summer is over.I have till then to figure something out.I think I might try to save this one.The worse that could happen is that I lost a few hour of my time.I might get lucky and find a good original tailgate.I dont plan on or want to buy a new one.
You might find a thread of me saving this tailgate in a few months.

Re: Repair or replace-tailgate

If you have the "skills" you could drill out the spot welds, cut the gate in half (front side and back side) sand and rust treat it and cut out/replace any pinhole areas. Weld it all back together. Sounds like a lot, but good straight tailgates are hard to come by.

Re: Repair or replace-tailgate

I think if you take off that rear bumper & put a step bumper on, it would solve your problem.

Well it would solve my no rear sport bumper problem anyway!
