what is the propper way to set a detent cable? is the slotted end of the cable that attaches to the carb suppose to be able to slide or tighten so it stays in a fixed position?

Re: detent cable adjustment
It needs to slide . The idea is, to adjust it so that at Wide Open Throttle it gets tight and pulls the mechanism inside the trans. You can play with the adjustment to get it to kick down earlier if you like, but that's up to you.

Re: detent cable adjustment
I recently had to do this so it's still fresh inmy mind, I couldn't figure out where the adjustment was, it's kind of hidden on the cable right behind it's mount, have someone sit in the drivers seat, lift up on the tab that unlocks the cable, have the person in the truck slowly push the throttle to the floor, & then pudh the tab back down into it's locked position.
