hey ya'll, I just got a new 67 GMC project vehicle. manual steering, manual brakes, straight 6, 3 on the tree. I want to convert it to power steering/power brakes and put a bigger engine in it. my question : would it be easier to just put a later model frame underneath it theat has all the power steering and brakes, or would it be easier just to install each seperately? Im used to building camaros, so i dont know too much about these trucks, thought i'd give it a try. thanks for the help.

Using the existing frame: 1) frame would have to have the dimple for the power steering box, 2) power brakes just sits on the firewall, 3) would need V8 engine perches. The last two are pretty easy. If the frame doesn't have the dimple, some have made one with a hammer. Only advantage to going to an older frame would be a 71-72 and get front disc brakes.

to change the whole frame would be way to much unneeded work, change the front crossmember to a 73-87 truck and most of the swap is complete

If you are tearing it down anyway,then using a later frame is a good idea.Especially if you can find one that has everything the way you want it already...rebuilt,lowered,crossmembers/mounts,etc.Maybe even the drivetrain you want.A beat V8/auto,p/s,p/db,longbed is an easy find.Your little`67 GMC is kinda rare.

Welcome, PS & PB mods are easy since you already have a working knowledge of GM stuff. Stuffing a V8 in there is super easy. Whatever mods you can think of it's been done already or could be figured out by board members. Post somemore details and pics of your new toy.

I agree with cooter. Its pretty easy swap with later crossmember. I did this on my 67. All bolt holes lined up except 2 and those needed openened up a bit w/ die grinder, I re-routed brake lines to front of croosmember like later model and used prop valve and master cylender from same truck. I also made a spacer for the steering box to get around not having dimple on frame. Make sure and check fittings from pump to box. Don,t ask me how i know this. Evidentaly chevy changed to threads somewhere along the way. If you get pump and box from same truck this shouldnt be a problem. Hope this helps. Greg

unre,If you swap to a later frame the only option is a 71-72.The front crossmember works from later on the early frames but the frame itself is different.You can make anything work as long as you have plenty of $$$ to throw at it but it's really easier to use your frame and uppdate.If you have a running,driving truck you may want to buy a frame to build so that your foundation is complete when you get ready to swap your cab and bed.

My ultimate plan is to use the complete rolling chassis from either a 1999+ Chevy 4x4 or a 2000+ 4x4 Tahoe. Tahoe is within 1" of the 67-72 wheelbase. 99+ SWB is 2.5" longer. That would give me 4 wheel antilock brakes, a stronger frame, GenIII mounts, power steering, increased reliability, and no rust. I'll convert it to AWD like my Silverado SS, so traction won't be an issue.

There ya go.It`s funny,this started out with everyone but me saying you don`t need to do all that work to swap frames,just put the parts on your frame,to talking about all these plans to put other frames under their trucks to get modern benefits...
I still say,if your restoring the truck and tearing it down,it would be way easier to get a donor truck or just frame to do your upgrades.There`s nothing "piece-o-cake about swapping front end assemblies,crossmembers,and all out from 35+ year old trucks(remove twice).

I just removed all the crossmembers and running gear from a 72 frame to do a 4x4 conversion. I now know more than I need to know about conversions.....That leaves me with a complete front crossmember (including P.S. and a Disc P.B. set up)
