catalytic converters

My 78 gmc does not have catalytic converters. What was the first year that these trucks were equipped with a converter. How can I find out whether or not I am supposed to have them on my truck?

I know in Texas 84 and older do not have to have cats. I passed emissions fine without cats.

wlarue72,

I know that Brandon provided a more practical answer regarding whether Texas law requires cats on your rig. Nevertheless, since other posters occasionally ask similar questions, and since I once wrote an answer to one of these inquiries on this board, I am going to try to post a link to that earlier thread here...

There is a sticker under your hood, by the latch. I believe it tells you if the truck came with a cat from the factory. That sticker is what AZ uses to make sure you have everything you should.
