Anyone switch from a powerglide to a 700r4?
For the people who have done this did you get to you the same shifter linkages or did you have to modify? Also would like to see some finnished pics as well. I'm starting mine in a few weeks.

Re: Anyone switch from a powerglide to a 700r4?
Dunno about the shifter linkages, but I'm happy for you about upgrading to a 700R4 from a PG. You should see a WORLD of difference both on the bottom end and on the top end.
Suggestions though: Make sure you run a transmission fluid cooler. The 700R4 is less tolerant of overheating. Pay particular attention to the Throttle Valve (TV) adjustment. It's critical to get it right. No, It's critical to get it right. May I say It's critical to get it right? Not doing so will result in unpleasant shifts and shortened tranny life. Finally, getting the torque converter to lock up is a simple thing, but may require a few parts. It's worth the hassle in the long run to hook it up as it improves mileage even more than the overdrive, and will reduce tranny heat buildup. Happy motoring. You're going to be impressed to say the least.

Update. I'm starting it next week. I have everything else down but the shifter linkage. Want to know if I have to modify it so I can do it while the engine is out.

Re: Anyone switch from a powerglide to a 700r4?
It's been a while, but i did use my orginal shifter with orininal no tilt
colum. I'm sure we tweaked it but not much. Its been in since 95. Classic perfomance products offers a nice one for 20 bucks. Either way u still have to tweak them to "time your tranny shifts". Mainly because of th 4 speeds and the tranny being about 4 inches farther back. I think we made sure new tranny was in park and the colum was in park befor we took any thin loose. Hope this helps |

Can you look at yours and tell me if turning it counter-clockwise untile it stops if that is park? It was out when I bought it. Also is it P-R-N-D-3-2-1?

Re: Anyone switch from a powerglide to a 700r4?
I ran mine for a long time with the old none tilt column, It was only about
a year ago that I put in the ididit column and got the shift linkage from ccp. I got some qualified help with the tv adjustments and the wiring for torque converter lock up off the brake switch. Anyways I bought mine from street and performance(mena, arkansas) in 1995 it's still going. I hope you have the same good fortune. poco |
