Re: What do I have?
9 ft... I remember that red wrecker, and upon your initial post, I instantly said to myself... I sure wish we had gotten the VIN and model number off of it. Without those numbers, we can argue all day, but the fact is, it's a crap shoot. There is no way of knowing without those numbers.
Could it have been a cab/chassis truck, with a bed tossed on it? We've seen it before. (And seen it called original) Could it have been a one ton 9 foot step... with the rear axle swapped? Seen that before too. Hell, it could have been a COPO truck... but without a photo of the SPID, there is no point in arguing it. As for the second link... that VIN posted is so messed up, there is no way it is for a 69... way too many typos, or just a bogus VIN. UNtill I see a model number on a SPID, that indicates a truck with a bed (be it an 04 or a 34 model) and it has the DRW conversion listed on that spid, I'll go by what the books say. I know that you know your stuff... but this is about like the loch ness monster or the all original unrestored 1/2 ton 68 with a small back window. Untill proven otherwise... it's all a fary tail IMO. |

Re: What do I have?
i remember i was one of several doubters about the originality of groundflyer's wrecker. andy you hit the nail on the head--no option sheet with it's essential info=no authenticity. i believe that we had gotten groundflyer to the same place and i beleive he actually added the picture of the option sheet to the ebay listing because of our doubts. of course it was almost totally unreadable and this sparked more doubt amongst us. he wrote out what he could make of the vin and rpos and posted them. the sad thing was that he sold the truck to a chicken farmer for $800 who tore off the bed and wrecker assembly and converted it to a flatbed. i pursued contacting the buyer because 9 foot step beds are hard to come by and he originally agreed to sell me the bed but never contacted me again. i remember talking to this chicken farmer and specifically asking him about the option sticker and in paticular the dual rear wheel conversion and he said that the sticker did indeed have that option on the sheet. but i do agree 100% that we are still unable to confirm that trucks authenticity based on word of mouth. also we are still unable to confirm that gm even offered in any form a factory dual rear wheel conversion. option sheets can be forged both past and present.
my interest was sparked again when sasquatch posted his truck and my hope was and is that he can produce a pic of the option sheet. if he is fortunate enough to have a factory converted truck then we might be able to cross reference his rpo with that red wrecker's "mystery" rpo. Finding 2 trucks with the same or even similar rpo #s for factory dual rear wheel conversion might be enough for me to start believing this myth. of couse i still hope one day to open some old famer's barn doors and find that copo 67 with the 427--haha!

Re: What do I have?
As long as we find one with the DRW conversion, listed with the RPO on the SPID, and it has the model number for a truck with a bed.

Re: What do I have?
9footfan, CARS4567 could not give away his running 9ft stepside here in Seattle. He might still have it but he moved out of town. I saw another in North Bend, WA awhile back (BREEH country). I like to say...RARE does not necessarily mean DESIREABLE...LOL!

Re: What do I have?
Im terrably sorry for not replying for so long. I had a family medical emergency that took me out of state for a few days. All seems to be working out well as far as that goes. The inside of my glovebox door (along with the rest of the interor metal) has been repainted with what looks like a spray bomb, the SPID looks to be there and covered by just enough paint to completly cover it. any sugestions on the best way to remove the paint and not destroy the decal under it? David

Re: What do I have?
I have to retract that last post. It looks like someone took the time to tear off the SPID before painting the inside of the glove box door. so i guess this one is unverifiable. David

No I havent, I didnt realise Chevy used broadcast sheets. I have alot to learn, Mopar made it realy easy to document vehicles, espicaly from about '67 into the '80s. Im learning day by day how to break things down on these trucks. I'll go digging down under tomorow and let Ya'll know what I find. any place else I should look for information? David |

Re: What do I have?
I have personally seen one just like your truck in a junkyard here in Fort Worth last year. It was listed as an option on the glove box. It looked just like yours. It could be ordered that way from the factory. And it had the fleetside box from the factory with the wider fenderwheels.

Re: What do I have?
My older post. It looked like yours even had the flares.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ad.php?t=85444 The glove box is long go but I will go check to see if it is still there to get pictures to prove it.

I don't understand what all the fuss over original is. If ya want an original truck, the dealer will sell ya one. But keep in mind, as soon as ya start it it's not original anymore because the factory air that came in the cylinders just went out the exhaust. You move it and now it has unoriginal dirt on the tires. original = myth

Re: What do I have?
Im not too worried about the origionality of the truck, but I am curious wether or not it was avaliable as an option or later modification. It makes for an intresting conversation. David

Before I found this board I never knew these trucks could be had with things like speed warning and such. Kinda cool info. (There's alot of that sort of info on this board!)
