I have not done this but i believe that the tranny crossmember needs to be moved and the tranny mount and kick down cable are different for the two tranny

Re: Th400 to 700r4 swap
The 700R4 was a factory option on later trucks. Can you just rob parts from a junkyard truck? That transmission is so popular that there should be kits available.
if you are just having problems adjusting the TV cable, I think there are directions on 73-87.com. I hear that adjusting it is critical. Mess it up and the transmission will burn up... See also http://www.tvmadeez.com/ Slonaker |

Re: Th400 to 700r4 swap
It is not called a kickdown cable, TV cable is the proper teminology. Pull up the lever in the trans, hook the cable to it...once you get the assembly in the "tube", it cannot come apart. If this still won't work, pull off the pan, you will then be able to see it in the trans and hopefully re-connect it. I was able to get it to work without pulling off the pan...but it took a couple attempts.

Re: Th400 to 700r4 swap
another trick to the TV cable is once you get it hooked have someone pull up on the other end of the cable so that it slides up into the tube and then have them hold it while you put the bolt in and tighten it down.....i've changed a crapload of them and got them on the first try everytime
