Transmission Removal ?
Is it possible to remove and replace a transmission in a 67 with a 350 with out pulling the engine. Seems like there's no room to get to the bolts.

I'm guessing that you have a V8 mounted in the I6 position (or 4x4), with the engine almost completely against the firewall.
If so, it would be tough

Yes, It's mounted where the six went. I guess I'll just pull the motor.

just pull the front end off. w/ that out of the way you will be able to reach right in there and get to them. not to mention it only takes about 20min to pull the whole thing off it . it only like 12 bolts.

Is there a difference in the engine mounts between a 67 and a 72? I have a 72 and i just put the truck on a lift and pulled the tranny out that way.

even in the 6 location, I'd just drop the tranny alone. I see absolutly no reason to pull them together... IMO, it's just askin for damage and a mess.

I agree ... its easier to just lift the truck and pull it from under. Besides you are already there to drain it anyway. I find it easier IMO to get to the top 2 bolts from under the truck.
Also it gives you a chance to get a good look under the truck.

You should be able to pull the tranny alone. I did it with my BBC 402 and TH400. The worst part was dealing with the single exhaust Y-pipe being in the way. Like they said above, put a piece of wood and either a jack or a stand under your oil pan so your dizzy doesn't get crunched.

I pulled out my Powerglide with the motor still installed. It sucked because the truck was on jackstands, but I got it out. I would highly recommend a lift if you are leaving the motor in.

the hard part is if you don't have access to a tranny jack. I pull at least one a week (normally the 4L80E tranny, which is a HEAVY sob) at work. If you don't have a jack, and you are on your back... don't even bother trying if you are a little guy, it'll drop outta there faster and harder than you think.
Borrow or rent a tranny jack, or, if you weld, you could fab something for a floor jack. If you are a little guy, with no big friends, and no tranny jack... well, then maybe yankin the engine and tranny might be a better idea. I just HATE the thought of swinging the combo around on the end of a hoist, by the heater core, windshield... all the while dumping ATF all ove the place. |
