Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

If anything you will have to play with the lenth of th rod coming off the pivot on the pedal and get a length that will work with the master cyl.after you mount it on the firewall. How deep into the firewall did the engine fit? I had to cut and make new covers for the inside to get the engine to sit in the right spot. Right I am designing a tilt front end for it. I want it to be steel and not fiberglass.

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

The only thing that you should have to figure out is the length of the rod you will need after you mount the master cyl on the firewall.
How much modification did you have to do to the firewall to get the engine to sit where it is supposed to?
I had to cut the firewall and make new covers for the inside.

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

i havent made any modifications yet because i have no adaptor plate or transmission yet so i dont know what needs to be cut...the engine fits on its own without a problem. I think the actual firewall wil be fine but the transmission tunnel will need to be modified.

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

Where did you get your Mounts at? I think you will find you will have to modify the firewall also. I have a 24valve and I mounted it on the stock mounts with adaptors from ford cummins,Roger knows what he is doing.
He has answered a lot of questions for me.
I used dodge rubber mounts to tie everything together.
I had to modify the trans tunnel because I am using a 6 spd. and had to build a new crossmember and moved it back 12 inches. If I can help just ask

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

I am using gen 1 dodge mounts. After doing some more research on the nv4500 swap it is going to cost alot more then expected. I have found some more allisons 540/545s for sale locally and i am looking into them.

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

I was searching around for specs on a Allison 545 and from what I found, it has a 3.45 first gear. With 2.73 rear gears and tall tires this should still give you ok acceleration. Chances are it will come out cheaper than an NV4500 since countless school buses use the 545, the only trade is off that you will be limited on top speed to how numerically low of a final drive you can get by rear gears and tires.

By comparison, a Turbo 400 only has a 2.48 first gear.

Exclamation Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

Just a thought here, there is a kit you can get to put the 9" rear end in the truck real easy. Also if you look for an old Lincoln there seems to be plenty of them in the bone yards these days because they were so heavy and not so good on fuel. The late 80's models had the 9" with disc brakes and highway gears and 650FT/TRQ is not a problem and the re-drill is a great option. If you had the diesel before, then you already have the 3/4 ton coil springs in the front you may want to get the big sway-bar and HD shocks and I would recommend the the High Mileage Bower wheel bearings, otherwise the Chevy 1 ton stuff is an easy swap and plenty cheap, I just found a whole truck less motor and tranny for $200 on Craig's List !!!

Are there any other year lincolns that have useable rear ends for our trucks?

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

well it seems the plans for this build change as often as i change my clothes. I have found an awesome deal on a complete dodge driveline... newer inline pump intercooled cummins with an nv4500(updated 5th gear) and a dana 70 with tracloc rear...
this is quite tempting because it would solve the entire issue.

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

If it's a good deal then I say go for it. As long as the Dodge rear is the right width all you would have to do is re-weld the spring perches.

Re: cummins with a 12-bolt

measured up the 70 and looks like the leaf pads line up pretty good. I will just have to make new shock mounts. I put in my offer so im crossing my fingers.
