California Introduces Bill to Require ANNUAL Emissions Tests for Vehicles 15-Years Old and Older

Here we go again! Legislation (A.B. 616) has been introduced in the California Assembly by Assemblyman Dave Jones to require annual Smog check inspections for vehicles 15-years old and older. The bill would also require that funds generated through the additional inspection fees be deposited into an account which can be used to scrap older cars. You may recall that in 2004 a new law was enacted in California to require the lifetime testing of all 1976 and newer model-year vehicles. Pre-1976 motor vehicles would remain exempt under A.B. 616. The bill has been referred to the Assembly Transportation Committee.

We Urge You to Contact Assemblyman Jones and members of the Assembly Transportation Committee (List Below) Immediately to Oppose A.B. 616
A.B. 616 ignores the minimal impact vintage cars have on air quality.

A.B. 616 could entice vintage car owners into allowing these vehicles to be scrapped.

A.B. 616 ignores the fact that vehicles 15-years old and older still constitute a small portion of the overall vehicle population and are a poor source from which to look for emissions reduction.

A.B. 616 ignores the fact that classic vehicles are overwhelmingly well-maintained and infrequently driven.

A.B. 616 would increase costs by creating an annual inspection fee for owners of these vehicles.

A.B. 616 represents another attempt by California legislators and regulators to scapegoat older cars.

Please contact members of the California Assembly Transportation Committee immediately by phone, fax or e-mail to request their opposition to A.B. 616.

So what's the problem? It doesn't look like it effects our trucks and some would argue (including myself) there is no such thing as classic or vintage anything after 72 anyways.
The only thing I see here that is different from the way it is now is you will have to smog the 76 and newer vehicles every year instead of every other year, which I agree can be a pain, but not a coffin nail

That right there is the $tory behind the $tory! I knew that was the case back in the early 80's, Car passed all emission levels but was failed because some high dollar part was missing.

It may not be a coffin nail but it's just part of the incremental way that big brother separates you from MORE of your hard earned cash. Also, while it may not affect the older trucks many of us on the forum have cars as well that are affected! That extra $150 every other year could be shoes for the kid, tire for the truck, replacement door gaskets, etc., etc.

We are not just fans of the '60s and '70s trucks. We are car enthusiasts of all vintage, antique, and classic auto's. It effects us alot more than you think. If it starts in one state it could expand to other states. Just another way for the government to screw us.

(bringing it up) - if people paid more attention to what the governement is doing TO the people instead of yesterdays sports scores, this country wouldn't be the way it is - and like some others said here, it may not effect you directly but it WILL.. first they take away your .50 cal, next, it's your BB gun - they won't stop until THOSE WHO ARE "REPRESENTED" put the wall up!

Bring your trucks to Germany. We have to have a safety and emissions check every 2 years if you want to keep driving here.
They are thinking about banning vintage cars without catalytic converters from driving in downtown and populated areas. Cool huh.
