Oil pan gasket

I changed my oil pan gasket for a 1 piece. I added some RTV on both sides, let it dry, then put it on. At start up both ends are leaking. The front seal under the timing cover leaks pretty rapidly and the rear leaks slowly. WTF did I do wrong? Was I not supposes to put the RTV on the gasket since it's rubber? Help!

Yep, no silicone with the rubber, EVER. Sorry about that, I did it on an intake once and learned my lesson.

Okay, so now what is the best way to take the RTV off the rubber gasket?

they make two different one piece pan gaskets as well

one has a big thick front seal and one has the small front seal

the one with just the single loop for the dip stick is the thin one

the one with the double loops , dip stick on both sides of the gasket is the thick one

this makes a big difference when trying to get it seal

Alright, here's my progress with this issue...No Progress! I bought a second single dip stick loop gasket since the RTV I put on the other one isn't coming off without a fight. I got it all bolted together, fired her up, and it leaks worse than the gasket w/ RTV on it. I tightened some bolts more and no change. I guess I now need to get that double loop gasket rage'nrat mention above. Does anyone happen to have a good part number for this gasket or any other suggestions of what I should do?? Thanks!

i had a heck of a time trying to get my oil pan to seal up. ended up buying a moroso pan and one piece gasket and still had leaks. after numerous attempts and gaskets we finally got it sealed. i will try to get part numbers asap. ive been there and it sucks, hope the leaking stops.

Been there done this.

Couple questions: are you running an after market timing cover yes no maybe so?

Richard H. ran into this not to long ago and I have myself. I'm not 100% sure if he did this or not though.

Some after market timing covers are just NOT made right. You will beat your head against the wall trying to get the leaks fixed.

First let me say this I always run the one piece gaskets unless I run into this problem.

The remedy I have used in the past but it has been awhile is older stock gaskets two sets. Double up the outside rail gaskets cutting tha tabs off of the side rail gaskets closest to the pan. Make sure this does not cause the oppisite problem on the back of the pan though.

This may not be your problem but I have seen it more than once it just takes some checking to see if the pan is seating down on the rails when it is placed on the end seals.

You know RJ22 that was quite a drag and I know what POS 68 is going through. After 5 or 6 attempts and gasgets the final out come was the POS chrome timing cover with tiny globs of rtv sqeezed up between the inner gasget retainer and cover. Apparently the people with the funny looking eyes don't think it should welded all the way across . GGRrrrrr.
Went with a GM style from JEGS , cast aluminum which was actually moroso when I got it and another 1-piece rubber gasget life was suddenly good! NO leaks at all! But be warned... when you go back with a short water pump , the bolts for the cover on the back have to be ground down where they hit the cover for clearance.

Alright, here's the latest update. I bought the OS 34510T gasket and installed it on Monday. It actually worked! So Tuesday morning I look under the truck and It's leaking again, very little though. It looks like I needed to put more RTV on the timing cover where the 2 meet. F it, I'm going to change the timing chain and cover gasket next weekend so it can wait. Since I had to go with the thicker OS 34510T gasket, is there a timing cover gasket I need to get to match it? If so does anyone have a stock number? Thanks everyone for your help on this!!

not really.. sumitt sell's the whole timing cover gasket set for like 6.00 with the seal i ordered two to have a extra..
napa gets double that..

just bust out the ultra gray silicone

you can really see where that thicker gasket does it's sealing on the timing cover.. can't you

i have made this mistake before how do you think i know about the two different gaskets

don't think they make a one piece there

all you will need is the paper gasket for around the cover and the bottom part will be the pan gasket part already there..
blast a new balancer seal in there you should be good to go

o yea and add the ultra gray silicone in the corners i even smeared some around the complete rubber part with my finger just to make it tacky all the way around. make sure its clean..no oil !!!
