Decoding and building suggestions please!
Ok guys i went and bought that 350. I can sorta distinguish the casting but the last digits are blurred. the first are 397 but the rest i cant make out well, seems like it might be some zeros or something but the casting blew. Anyways the head number on these is 462624 and i measured a few of the valves. They were what looked like 1.9/1.5.
The block is from general inspection about 4.040" bore and the pistons in it are slightly dished. The guy i bought it all from said he thinsk the motor was bored 40 over and that he thinks it has a steel crank. A few of the valves on one head are burned and the motor has been sitting for like 15 years. It came out of a 70's step-van or something like that i was told. This will be my new long term project/learning toy as i've never rebuilt am motor. The rockers look good and he gave me the old pushrods. I'll have to take off the timing cover and oil pan to see more stuff. Thanks for the help guys, i'll keep ya'll posted. Ohh FYI i paid 80 for it all. ------------------ 69 Custom 20, 396BB,Longbed fleetside. New Oak Bed With SS strips... damn nice. the block is probably 3970010 or 014
the heads are scrap get rid of them now before they ruin your bottom end, 624 are the worstheads out of all the heads GM ever made, 882 are second worst., lots of cracks and very cheap thin wall casting they are, unfortunately both castings are very common, i scrapped 4 sets of 882 last fall and a couple 624 and found a set on the 85 350 that i removed and am scrapping too after i rob the pipe plug and temp sender off them good luck ------------------ Randy- Lincoln, IL randy@ccaonline.com 2177353230 *many GM parts bought, traded, or sold -am parting out: '81 Cutlass Supreme Brougham current fleet: -71 C-10 350/CH465/3.07- basketcase, #1 -90 Cavalier 2.2L sky blue, a driver -84 Z28 5.0L/700R4/3.73 daily driver -84 Firebird/SE 2.8L/T-5/3.73/engine bad, project #2 -82 purple Trans Am, project #3 *Paint is overrated* © RSS Enterprises 2000 |

If you bore again, .060 stroker (400 crank) will make it a 388. I'd just hone the cylinders and have the crank turned (provided it hasn't been turned before). Some people go .020 under on the crank, but I personally wouldn't go more than .010. You can tell if you have a steel crank by looking at it. A cast one will have mold lines in it. Change those heads!!!! Vortec seem to be the way to go.

Sort of on topic, sort of off: When did Chevy start scalloping the outboard edge? My '78 624s have that edge (and they both had at least one crack running through that edge as well as a crack through the center steam holes), but my '69 882s don't.
I say '69 because their straight outboard edge is supposed to designate an earlier, thicker (ergo stronger) casting (so said my instructor & my machinist). I do know those heads were a few pounds heavier than my 624s (I weighed them as bare castings fresh from the hot tank). ------------------ 67 C20 '78 400sb 0.030" over, 9:1 cr, CC Xtreme 4x4 254H, port-matched '69 882 heads & stock cast iron intake, rebuilt Q-jet, Summit headers (1 5/8" primaries), true dual 2 1/2" glasspacked exhaust, NP435CR trans, 4.57 Eaton rear end. It's a decent-looking work truck. No top-end, but it's great off the line. '69 International Loadstar 1700 school bus converted to an RV. Working p/s (only took three years and three owners to replace the belt & a pressure line), low-compression 345 (176 certified net hp @ 3800rpm), single 3" exhaust w/custom cherry bomb muffler, NP435 trans, two-speed Eaton rear end, very warm & rodent-free heaters.

I wish I could remember who sent me this...it was someone on this board.
Some of the 882's are not too bad acording to this. I had been told in the past that there were some 882's worth looking for, I guess this kinda shows which ones. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. Longhornmail, so to ID the inferior 882 head externally, the exhaust manifold bosses on the driver front and passenger rear would be longer and have an extra hole that would be visible when using stock ramhorns, correct? Thanks for the clarification.

As far as machine work is concerned (assuming you are going that direction), let your machine shop do all your measuring and recommending on tolerances. Since you are going to possibly put it back in your truck, go with the Vortech heads (new assemblies from most dealers, I like Sallee-Chevrolet.com). I went with a Comp Cams Extreme 4x4 camshaft (but then I have a roller block), for the low end torque and decent HP (similar setup rates 350hp@5100 and 390lb/ft@3800 (368lb/ft@3000).
Check it out... http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Chev...e_4x4_350.html Mainly, make sure your parts make a package. And make sure the package matches the intended target platform and use. ------------------ '68 C-10 LWB, '98 Z-71 350 w/accessories (Serpentine), Edelbrock Performer, GM HEI, CompCam Extreme 4x4, Thorley Headers, 700r4, 3.73, disc brakes and power steering upgrades.
