I decided to do something, for a change
I have been on the downside of working on my truck. It just sits in the shop and I never drive it. I know it feels neglected. The last thing I done to it was added the Caltrac bars, over a year ago. I mean I have really been neglecting the poor thing.
Anyway, I have really been hating driving it because of the gas smell. It makes you smell like gas and you have to change clothes after driving. I thought it might have been the vent on the tank I have made since removing the emissions stuff. But this week, I found out it was my Edelbrock 1904 q-jet causing all the problems. I tweaked on the thing such as lowering the float because I noticed all the gaskets were wet, changing the power valve spring to a weaker one, adjusting the IM screws, and all this was too no avail. I'm not totally sure what is the problem and don't care to mess with it. Now all who know me know that I love q-jets and can work on them. But I must admit they are butt ugly. Ever since I seen the Edelbrock Thunder series AVS carbs I have wanted one. So, I decided to buy the 650 cfm unit, in EnduraShine. I love shiny stuff. After I swapped out my Performer intake for a Performer RPM unit, I had to quit using the Ram Air Box because it was too tall. I have been using a plain jane chrome 14" air cleaner, with a drop base. So, with a little triming, I fixed it to where I can once again use the box. So I am waiting for the carb and stuff to get here. Today, I was thinking, what do I want to do now. Then it hit me. I want stainless steel braided power steering hoses. So, I now have all the Aeroquip stuff coming for that. I tell you one thing for sure. If the cost of AN fittings and braided teflon hose has anything to do with how good it is, they will be the best thing since sliced bread. Time I got done, I'm going to have a tad over 88 bucks in damn power steering hoses.  That's three feet of hose, three 90 degree fittings and three adapter fittings. Oh well, it's only money. I have to do something to get me out of the funk I have been in as far as my truck goes.Oh, I also plan on doing a lot of other stuff down the road. One thing I am working towards is a paint job, but I have to get in the right frame of mind for that one.

Glad to hear you are getting back into it Mike, post some pics when you get everything installed. Hell, if you feel like writing an article on the PC hose upgrade, let me know and I'll add it to the site.
When you want me to come over so we can start that frame off? I am getting good at it.

Jeff, I would love to do a frame off but I'm afraid I would probably be dead before it was done.
As far as an article, not much to write about. The biggest thing is finding the right parts. Of course, it would probably be nice for folks who wanted to waste money on this sort of thing, to have a list of what is needed to do it. |

I've been having similar issues with my Q-jet, but finally trouble shot it to a "heavy" float. The GM engineer who thunk up nitrocell carb floats should be tarred & feathered. Main thing is, have fun, I guess.

I got the carb installed today. Everything went smooth as silk. I do plan on getting one of these.
 I am going to get one without the filter since I already have a Russel filter. The Edelbrock carbs are weird in where the fuel inlet is at the back. This fuel inlet will make it much easier to hook up my AN fuel hose. Felt good to drive it and not smell like gas when I got out. Shadetree, I believe you are onto something here. I thought about the float soaking up some gas, especially since it sits a lot anyway. Only thing it could be with all the gaskets being wet. I will replace the float and fix it. Who knows, I may decide to go back to a Q-jet some day. I have always loved Q-jets anyway. Just wanted something different for a change. So far, the Edelbrock is working for me. Even increased the vacuum a little bit. Anyway, I am here every day, always have been. I just haven't been posting much. I'll see if I can't change that too.

mike, why are you not getting the dual feed inlet? the avs carbs allow for the dual feed inlets(as i'm sure you know) its what i've been running on mine.
i dont know if it helps anything, but just wondered why you decided on the single inlet |
