random clinking under the hood

just the other day. i noticed that there was a clinking coming form the engine compartment. it sounded like the fan was hitting something or like if you put a hand full of pennies in a dryer. i popped the hood and everything was in order. no loose bolts on the pullies and nothing touching the fan. the clinking happens about one fourth of the time that i start it up and it only happens on start up and lasts till i get to my destination (locally). it also only happens under accleoration. could it be a bad water pump or altenator? what do yall think?

Re: random clinking under the hood

It does not sound like water pump bearings or an alternator to me. Could be in the valve train ..... clinking is a term I'm not familiar with, are you sure it is not a tapping noise that you hear? Hows your timing, could it be a pinging noise? ..... Need more info.

esll.

Re: random clinking under the hood

i guess i could be more specific. its not a valvetrain noise. i have had those in the past. it is a more crisp higher pitch sound. my flywheel doesnt ave a cover also. the sound comes and goes. today i took a 200 mile trip and i stopped at a gas station to fill up. when i took off it started again. i then put the truck in park, and turned the truck off. i i then started it up and the noise was gone. i have no idea what it is. the timming is also set at 11 degrees. what does pinging sound like?

Re: random clinking under the hood

You sure when the engine "torques" over when you are accelerating that the fan isn't hitting the shroud?

Re: random clinking under the hood

im pretty sure there is no contact with the fan shroud. there is a thin layer of fine dust on the inside of it and you would be able to see where t makes contact if it did.

Re: random clinking under the hood

I have the exact same issue that you are mentioning. I know the noise and I describe it the same way as pennies in the dryer. It usually happens in the morning. I thought maybe the chain was hitting something. I am to mechanically inclined. I have no cover also and nothing is loose or is the fan hitting anything. cant wait to find out what it is.

Re: random clinking under the hood

check you starter, I had the same noise once, kept popping the hood to see if anything was dangling into the fan. I pulled the starter and check the shaft, there was more than a 1/2" play in the shaft. answer was the bendix spring was weak or broken. the gear would slip into the flywheel once in a while. changed the starter and the noise went away. hope this fixes your problem

Re: random clinking under the hood

My '71 was doing that this week. Turned out to be a loose header bolt.

also beware of the flexplate.. have seen those crack and do the same thing..

they usually crack right at the connection to the crank..

Re: random clinking under the hood

I am going to offer up an odd one that got me in the past - check the condition of the spark plug wire shields that bolt to the heads. I had one of those come loose and it had me for a while. They sound very "tinny" like pennies in a dryer...

Re: random clinking under the hood

use a long screwdriver hold your ear closed and put the screwdriver against the bone in front of youre ear and the other end of the screwdriver on different parts of the running engine , its basicly a stethoscope wish could let you find more closely where the sound is comming from .
just be careful with long hair jewelery and that sortah stuff around the fan and wirring belts .
it could be the distributionchain hitting the cover
