Aftermarket Air Conditioning

I am new this board as well as new to the world of 67-72 trucks. I have a 1969 GMC Stepside that I am looking to install A/C in. I have read all the post about the Vintage Air units and was convinced to buy one, but I found the Brothers website for truck parts and they have a complete unit on sell for $900. It doesn't say what brand it is. It may be a package they have put together.
My question is, Does anyone have one of these units, and what do you think as far as install, quality of fit, and quality of performance. I would love to save the extra money for other goodies on the truck, but I don't want to sacrifice quality for a few hundred dollars.

Thanks,
Keith

First off, from South Texas. That system may be the one made by Old Air but I'm not sure. I'm sure someone a little more experienced than me will chime in.

Welcome...

If it is an underdash kit - the fit of them is tight in our trucks, but they look pretty slick once installed. Nothing outside, and done right, you won't see anything inside either.

There's some pics of my interior on my website. I may get the link working to go to my install of the A/C.

Re: Aftermarket Air Conditioning

I had one in my old truck from JC Penny. It used a York compressor and a ghetto setup. I think it was from 1973 or something.

There are newer models that I'm sure work a bit better than mine did. Then again mine might have worked great when it was new. I pulled it because of the legroom issue on the passenger side.

Welcome from a few miles to the West! (I'm over in Pace, ) Did you buy the truck down on HWY 90? Let me know if you need any parts.

Re: Aftermarket Air Conditioning

Thanks to everyone that has welcomed me to the board.

Hart_Rod,
I think I did. What I mean by that is the guy I bought it from bought it from a guy on Hwy 90. It's green with Mickey Thompson Centerline wheels, but the tires and wheels are too big for it. I am going to put some Rally Truck wheels with some 255/70r15 on it for a more stock look. It came from Arizona. It still has the Arizona plates on it. I haven't registered it yet.
I just picked up a crossmember and rearend from a 72 so I could do the disc conversion for the front, and the 6 lug to 5 lug all the way around. I will be looking to put a booster and MC on it along with the conversion since it has manual brakes on it now.
I am not real experienced the vintage truck/car world, and I hope that I have picked up a good truck to start with. It doesn't seem to be eaten up with rust, and from what I can tell it has been well taken care of. Besides the paint being faded, and a limb denting in the drivers side front corner of the cab the body seems solid. I hope? Did you happen to take a look at it? If so, did you find anything wrong with it. If so, I would like to know, but in a way I don't want to know.
Have you installed any of the A/C units in any of the trucks you have? I sure could use some advice on it. Not just the A/C, but the whole truck.
Has far as needing parts? I might. What do you have that you think I might need.

Keith
