s10 five speed question
Is the 5 speed trans out of a 90 2wd s10 with a four cylinder strong enough to take a stock 307? And is it the same as one out of a v6 truck?

Re: s10 five speed question
same tranny, but the 4 cylinder one is even more lame than the V6 one.
A stock 307, if you drive it like an adult... no tire spinning and minimal towing... you should be OK.... or, ok-ish at least. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 06-11-2007 at 11:44 PM. |

Re: s10 five speed question
You'll need to trim the bearing retainer a bit and trim the end off the input shaft about 1/4"-3/8" in order for it to bolt up. If you encounter resistance when bolting it on, you'll need to find out why. Also, be aware that the 89 and above and maybe a bit earlier all have electronic speedo output.

Re: s10 five speed question
The 4 cyl S10's were equipped with a T-5, standard issue tranny, I think they're rated to about 180 hp.
The V6 trucks did not actually have a T-5, they were equipped with a Muncie tranny which is much more stout (it also has a single piece case w/ integral bell housing). The later v6 trucks have (98 and newer) had the strongest 5 speed, and probably the only one that will stand up to any kind of abuse behind a V8 ( it's an NV3500 if memory serves)

The camaro and firebird boxes are much stouter than the S10 ones. They are world class (otherwise known as T-5Z) and rated to handle 360hp, or some of the later ones to 390hp. I'm running the same T-5 from an 89 IROC in my Sonoma. That said, the F-body box will not work in a 4wd without a lot of case mods Also missed earlier, the electronic speedos are kind of a mixed bag. The firebirds got electric in 87, and the camaros in 91. Anything up to the 91 has a gear driven electronic speedo and can be swapped out for a cable drive in about 5 minutes.

Re: s10 five speed question
the world class goes by year... old F bodys had the weak kneed model, later got world class... which even the WC one is only rated at 305 ft pounds of torque.

camaro one will need a wedge adapter fabbed for the mount... it mounts at an angle on te camaro, and the shifter will be under the bench seat

Re: s10 five speed question
Yea. I know about the whole camaro trans problem. We had a 68 camaro come in that was totally butchered and thrown together with leftover parts. They never modified anything so the trens will sit level so the shifter was hitting your leg ant there was no feathering the clutch. it was in or out.

Re: s10 five speed question
My bad, I meant the 4.3 v6 trucks.
I have all the dimensions needed to build a wedge tranny adapter if anyone is interested, shoot me a PM
