new headers and glasspack ?
hi guys. i have a 350, Non ERG EDELBROCK PERFORMER INTAKE MANIFOLD 2104. EDELBROCK 1406, HEI. my headers have a 3" out. i want too put glass packs on. what will give me more HP at low RPM's. dual or single pipes, 2.25, 2.5 or 3" pipes or. i have read that the larger the better. i also read i need some restriction or back pressure to help with scavaging at low RPM"s.
Got gas, need help. Thanks. Last edited by eaglelox; 05-24-2007 at 07:13 PM. |

Re: new headers and glasspack ?
Best scavenging effect and best torque for a mild 350 would be through the header you got now, then some 2.5" piping, then a Flowmaster Y-collector with dual 2.5" inlets and a single 3" outlet, then a single exhaust to a 3"-in-2.5"-out muffler, then a 2.5" tail after the muffler. If I weren't as broke as I'm I'd have done just that, only instead of muffler and tailpipe I'd run the 3" pipe from the Y-collector back to the beginning of the bed and then up behind the cab with a tractor flapper valve on top
Dual 2.5" exhaust is fine too, that's what I just put in like a week or so ago, ran me about $100 for two S-pipes, two turbo mufflers three extension pipes (one per side plus one cut in half to become the tips) and 6 clamps and 2 hangers - looks good, sounds good, and oddly enough clears everything. Dual 2.25" is what stock Mustangs run, and those got 302s and not 351s, so 2.25" is a little on the small side for yer 350. Dual 3" is way too much, that's what the guys with the big blocks run, unless you have a blower of some kind on that 350 a dual 3" system will actually work against you.

Re: new headers and glasspack ?
Just say no to glasspacks. I've got a pair on my Blazer thanks to the PO and can't wait to chuck them into a can. I can't imagine a more obnoxious muffler other than the fart cannons on the sport compact stuff. Even worse when the glasspacks are "blown out" like mine are. The popping/crackling and backfires (bang!) might have been cool when I was 16 but they are just annoying now.
There are much better mufflers out there. I'll end up either putting some basic turbo mufflers on or cheap flowmaster knock-off mufflers. 2 1/2" pipe and might even ditch the headers for stock manifolds as I'm tired of replacing collecter gaskets. If I can make it sound like my 69 Nova with 2 1/2 duals running through turbo II muffler's I'd be a happy camper. It's got a nice throaty burble at idle, semi quiet when crusing and flat out yells when you stand on the skinny pedal. One of the guys that helped install that system was pushing hard for me to use glasspacks and then to purposely blow them out so I had nothing more than straight exhaust. I said NO WAY as I didn't want it to be a cop magnet.
