Re: Identify this part...
Some sort of a shackle limiter. Looks pretty cool, never seen anything like that before...

Re: Identify this part...
You see them on bigger trucks all the time, it's basicly a bump stop to keep the shackle from going back too far.

Re: Identify this part...
I have it on my 72 K20, but it's only on one side. I was wondering what it is for as well. It's a solid chunk of metal

Re: Identify this part...
I would say it there on 4x4's to keep the slip joint on front drive shaft from bottoming out.

Re: Identify this part...
That is a factory part found on the 4 wheel drives. Seems to me it had something to do with if a spring breaks, it would keep you from going into oncoming traffic. I think it was orginal held on with rivets. Also, only found on the drivers side.

Re: Identify this part...
Yes,as too much stuff said...on the 4wds,drivers side only. There is also some metal welded on the drivers side front spring hanger to keep the spring in the spring hanger too. Most of the time that is trimmed off though because lift kit springs often have clearance issues with that metal on the spring hanger...

Re: Identify this part...
just a little FYI. i once had a 71 cheyenne shortbed 4x4 that had them on both sides and also had straps on both front hangers--it all "appeared" to be factory installed. according to the vin on the cab, it was a stepside when built in 71 but when i bought it, it was a fleetside with all the trim. i know, anyone can add a bed and trim but this had been done a looooonnnnng time before i got the truck. after looking closer at the frame it became apparent it was a replacement, it had no vin number anywhere on it. then i pulled all the crap out of the cab and the floor was bent up very bad, so i guess the truck had been totaled when it was fairly new and someone pieced it back together.
anyone else have one with these brackets on both sides.

Re: Identify this part...
It's on there because of the push pull steering.

I think my 69 has one, and both my 70's have them. Drivers side only though.

Re: Identify this part...
Do your pre-71s have the strap, too?I thought one of those was a recall in`71.

Re: Identify this part...
That makes the most sense! Turning the steering wheel probably would cause like a bump-steer situation on the left front. The wheelbase would shorten slightly on that side with the bushing squish and shackle swing when steering right. Since the stock spring is arched upward, when you hit a bump the shackle swings away from that stop. The only time the shackle would swing towards that stop trail riding would be when the left front is being lifted off the ground.
My 70 Jimmy has it but there doesnt appear to be holes in the frame, altho the bracket has slotted holes. It is welded on. Later---DAC
