Rear end troubles

My brother just bought an 87 3/4 4X4 and blew the rear out. Actually the gear teeth for the r&p flew thru the differntial cover. What I am asking is it better to try to fix the the componets or to replace the entire rear end with a used one?

If you are not in a rush to get a rear end go used. You could find one cheep if you look around
