68' new owner grill trim question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

After four years I know every nut and bolt of my 71'... but just bought a 68' and I'm sure I'm going to have questions from time to time. In staring at the newly purchased 68', all the front grill trim is pretty much farm trashed. I am going to remove it all. When it all goes back together the only trim I think I will want is the two large rectangular shiny pieces in the grill, and the letters on the hood front. Are there any quality repro trim pieces being made for what I am talking about?

I got all of my front trim pieces from www.manestruckparts.com
I don't know who makes them but they are very good quality.

This is the begginning of Project OverKill.

Truck is an unmolested 68' longbed farm truck, so goes the story. Has North Dakota plates and what looks like the original N.D. dealers strickers on the cowl. The doors aren't cut, dash isn't cut, looks to be the original 350 engine. Rockers are not rusted, cab corners and supports look fine and rust does not appear to be an issue with this truck. It has it's bumps and bruises but really looks to be a very good starting place. Somehow I really like the look of the original dashes and finding one that is un cut and doors un cut and little to no rust is quite a trick, especially in a 68'. I have been looking for a SWB 68' for quite some time. I didn't want to spend 5 grand, so here we are. The truck will be stripped down. I am going to start dismantling the bed today, and eventually the frame will be shortened to a SWB with the help of Glock (Bob) in Fort Collins.

My parts came from LMC Truck in Lanexa, KS. I personally have never had any problems with them.

If the V8 SBC engine is original then it's a 307 or 327....no 350's in 68. 250, 292, 307, 327 or 396BBC were the options. Got a pic of the glovebox sticker?

I bought mine from The Truck Shop, I think they were made by "counterparts." They were cheap and for a reason. The look good, by they are very thin and flimsy. It's been almost a year, my truck sits outside year round, they still look new.

Ya see...I didn't know that. I've been tuned into the 71' year. Time to learn about the 68's eehhh! LOL! Here are some pics. Truck even has a Protect-o-Plate found in the glove box!

I am deleting the eyebrow and hood gingerbread and shaving the side markers to make a 67 "look" as well. Looks good and the only trim I have that was good was the grill trim. Soooooooooooooo........................

you should contact that dealer and send them some pics...

I am guessing that's a 307 but you need to pull the numbers off the front pass side deck to be sure.

Project overkill will stay with a manual trans...yes. I was doing some looking...I think there are some nice options out there for a manual/overdrive tranny. NV3500 T-56, not all that sure...but when the time comes...I'll be asking for advice from you guys. But yes clutch stays!
