Swapping Vin. Numbers
I'm swapping cabs and want to know about the legallity of swapping vin. numbers. My 72 cab is a clean, AC, rust free cab set up for an auto tranny vs a usable but needs work, legally registered, 67 cab. The 72 is a parts truck that is not registered and would cost a bunch to do so (California). The 67 is legal. Can I change vin. numbers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure there are members out there that have run into this situation. Thanks!

Re: Swapping Vin. Numbers
Check with the local DMV and see what you need to do, as long as you have both titles, I don't think there would be a problem. Do it legal, can save a severe headache down the road. Just swapping vins is a felony and whether there was no intent to defraud, you could still get in hot water, especially if you ever sold the vehicle. It can cause a curious cop to impound your ride until the matter gets resolved.

Re: Swapping Vin. Numbers
I am more lax than alot of people, but I think if you still have a the '67 frame, front clip, etc on there and it looks like a '67 then I personally would do it, because in my book it IS a '67 but with a '72 cab. Again, that is just me. Now, if you were trying to put a '67 title on a truck that looks like a '72, I wouldn't take that chance of a curious cop, buyer or whatever. It's gotta look the part.

Re: Swapping Vin. Numbers
I asked my dad (state trooper) about this (was going to do the same thing) and he said you fill out some paper work and have it inspected...that's in KS. Then I asked the lady at the local dept of liscensing in WA and got basically the same answer.

Re: Swapping Vin. Numbers
If the vehicle is ever sold and the VIN is checked and found to be different than the title, it may be difficult to get registered. I'd check with your DMV and follow their advice. They're the one's you will have to deal with in the long run. I don't think that the VIN's can be swapped between cabs without raising some eyebrows when you look at the rivets that hold the tag.
