Go here. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html

Its a VIN and model number decoder. the number you have is the VIN I think. You should have another letter after the 149 that is probably a B and the next digit should be a 1

CE149J 100001 is there example number

From the information you gave this is what I could get for your number.

cs149B139412 is what the number should be (I would think anyway without seeing it)
C - 2 wheel drive
S - six cylinder engine
1 - 1/2 ton
4 - pick up with bed
9 - 1969 model year
B - Baltimore assembly plant
139412 - unit number 39,412 built in that plant.

Re: metal plate

It tells you the vin is a 2wd.Meaning its a 4wd convert or 2wd body on 4wd chassis

Re: metal plate

The 8 may be acurate. Any plant that had the same model coming off a second assembly line would start with 700001 as the first one off the line, which would make this truck #139412 off the second assembly line. Being that 69 was a banner year for truck sales, it is highly possible.
68gmsee, that link is giving some wrong info on that VIN. The one on this site (as mvfd70 posted) is the most acurate one I have seen. It is only missing the info i just posted about the second assembly line, and the info for the additional C for a 72 model.

Interesting info. Thanks for sharing that. I didn't realize that.

Re: metal plate

They could have added 4x4 parts to make it a 4x4 or it could be an original 4x4 that they changed cabs on. As far as collectors standpoint, in my opinion, thats really up to you. It may not be the original VIN for the truck. If you can, find the VIN stamped on the frame and compare it to the one in the cab. If it's the same then its been upgraded to 4x4. If it's different, someone changed cabs.

Re: metal plate

The vin on my 69 K20's frame was on top of the drivers side frame rail just a bit behind where the steering box is located.

Re: metal plate

If the cab has been swapped onto a 4WD chassis, then it should have a different VIN on the chassis. If that is the case, there may be a paper trail for the swap that would legitimize the alterations.

I don't know what your vehicle registrations demand, but it sure bears some watching and explantions from the seller, if you haven't already made the deal.
