u-joint straps, or u-joint u-bolts?

I'm thinking you know which one you need, depending on weather or not the yoke on the rear is threaded or not?

I'm swapping a 71 (or 72) rear into my 68, and the u-bolts from the 68 are too narrow. I've noticed the new rear has threaded holes through the yoke, and the holes are further apart than the old.

My 72 uses a strap and bolts.

I suggest going to the parts store to get new bolts, because the heads on them are really small. In the past I have used regular grade 8 bolts from the hardware store and the heads got chewed up cause they're big.

you probably need the straps. my 67 orignally had u-bolts, but they were rusted solid into the yoke. when I replaced the yoke, I think it was off of a later truck, because it had straps instead of u-bolts.

Thinking more about this.... How in the world would I get a u-bolt through a threaded hole???? What was I thinking... must be the Old Mil.

Good idea about the better bolts though!

Thanks

they stopped using the u bolts after 1970 i believe. every 71+72 I've seen has straps but the yokes are interchangeable.

Seems to me that the u-bolt would be stronger? -- There must be at least 2 different widths of straps also.

U-bolts are definitely stronger. No self-respecting off-roader would run those crappy straps.

You could swap the yolk to keep running the u-bolts. There are some after market billet caps that work way better than the straps, about $25 for them and you'll never break em. Summit or Jegs

u-bolts vs billet caps... any opinions?

I got some straps today, but will either go billet, or swap yokes in the future when the day comes that I need a new seal.
