Viair 480 mounting question.

Hey how is everyone mounting the compressor to the frame? Through the feet you can only fit a 3/16" screw, just wondering if its hanging sidways if that will hold it? Anyone had any problems? Should i fab a plate so the compressor sits upright? thanks

Re: Viair 480 mounting question.

the screws that come with it should be fine. I haven't had any issues with my 380's mounted sideways.

Re: Viair 480 mounting question.

You can mount the compressor at any angle you choose to. I can tell you that the compressor cylinder wall will last longer if the cylinder head is pointing straight up, or down. That way the cylinder wall will wear evenly from the piston. I've seen several compressors that have come back with worn cylinder walls on one side from small debris particles wearign them down.
If you can mount the compressor so that it faces straight up and down it's best to do so. To help eliminate some of the vibration noise you can also put some small rubber grommets between the compressor and frame rail.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks.. I was thinking about making a bracket to hold the compressor upright..

Re: Viair 480 mounting question.

That would be best. Have it hang down so the head is pointing down and it might be easier to install. That way you can run a crossmember between the frame rails and mount them off the bottom of the crossmember. If you are interested in some mounting plates, I designed some the other day. I can cut you a piece of 3/16 that matches the compressor body outline and has the mounting holes in it. Or I've also done some mounts that were designed to weld on the side of a frame and allows the compressor to hang down off that mount. Super strong press broke brackets that mount, and protect the compressor as well.

Let me know.

Re: Viair 480 mounting question.

Ok, I am wanting to order my compressors this week, but want to double check before I do. I guess its either a pair of Viair 380's or 480's. I want to run two 5 gallon tanks as well. It looks like the 380 will take 3mins 30sec to fill from 165-200 for a single 5gallon. The 480 is 2mins 20sec for the same pressure switch. I am wondering two things, will this time change if the tanks are connected? Last, am I going overkill with that much pressure for RE7's.

Thanks, Ben

The Viair 380's and 480's are great compressors if you're looking for a 200 psi system. I personally like to run the 400C compressors because they're the fastest filling 150 psi pumps, and the most affordable. Here is some information about the fill times.

380c - 110-145 psi - 2.42 per 5 gallons
400C - 110-145 psi - 1.40 per 5 gallons
480C - 110-145 psi - 2.00 per 5 gallons

380C - 165-200 psi - 3.30 per 5 gallons
480C - 165-200 psi - 2.20 per 5 gallons

Unless you're looking for some serious speed, then the 150 PSI system will be plenty for your truck. It's reccomended that you have both tanks ( 5 gallons ) linked together for volume reasons. That way when you go to lift the truck you have 10 gallons of available air at once. There might be times where you only want, or need, to raise the front several times and you want to have plenty of air. If you only had one tank for the front, the compressor for that tank would keep running while the back tank and compressor were just sitting there, and not being used.

Compair the prices to the fill times and see which fits into your budget and desires for pressure and speed. The dual packs come with (2) compressors, (1) pressure switch, and (2) relays for wiring. Cheaper to buy them in a pack rather then individual.

380C Dual Pack - $286.80
400C Dual Pack - $277.60
480C Dual Pack - $364.60

I have two 380's on 2 5 gallons. I would do 480's if you can afford it...

If you double tanks and compressors it will still fill in 2 minutes 20 seconds.

And thats the perfect pressure for airride. I think everyone should run 165on-200off

Re: Viair 480 mounting question.

Some people also run the 380's or 480's on a 175 switch. That way you get more pressure then a 150 psi based compressors, they don't run as long since it's only going to 175, and they stay under the 200 psi warranty to extend the compressor life.

Re: Viair 480 mounting question.

Thanks Clint,

You are extremely helpful with a wealth of knowledge. Anyway, I am thinking 3/8 valves all the way around, maybe 1/2 fills for the front. This being my first air system I'm not 100% on anything. I want the system to be fairly quick, but controllable. The 400's sound great, just dont want to wish the system had a bit more pressure. Anymore suggestions would be great. Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Ben

I might be interested in something like that, you have any pics of these mounts? Thanks
