take a read in how to rebuild your Small Block Chevy by David Vizard, Chapter 2 Small Block Facts and Figures, Block Reliability " Generally speaking, there are few problems concerning block reliability on the small-block Chevy. Probably the least-reliable unit is the 400 cubic inch block, Due to the internal water-jacket design, these 400 blocks could not stand over-heating and come out out of it un-scathed".

I don't know much about engines and have found a lot of great knowledge in this thread. I have to ask this for I am left wondering now. I read here that they put 350 heads on a 400, but I heard a friend tell me he has a 350 with 400 heads on it. Another friend, the true mechanic of the bunch said that that sounded like a load of bull, but the wrench turner is mostly a Ford guy. This engine does have an oil cooler attatched to the oil filter mount and it has replaced freeze plugs... I am just looking for a little information before we drop it in the truck... Thanks!

Just got my swb on the road with a newly rebuilt 400/400 combo. Its a riot to drive, flat out goes!

I salvaged the 400 heads from the cracked block 400 and I am using them on a 350 block stroked 383. They are an open chamber head and work good for the larger cubic inch motors. The small chamber "fuelie" or "camel hump" heads are better for the smaller 283s and 327s. I know there are different opinions on this also. Point being that the 400 heads will fit other engines. The 350 or other heads will have to be drilled for the infamous steam ports unique to the 400s. If you plan on driving it on the street that is. Some dragsters won't bother drilling, but they don't run em long enough. And they ain't hauled a cab-over camper and pullin a car trailer or horse trailer over the Rockies either. If you haul or tow, get away from the steam vent/port 400, or you will end up with a steam engine!!! |

I want to build up a 400 SBC myself as my next project motor.
Can you 400 gurus tell me what years / models the 400 were primarily used in? I'm trying to think of the easiest spot at the junkyard... I had no idea they were in vans too, wow, but what years / models? Thanks, rough69 |
