12 bolt Mystery Marks

I pulled the differential cover off today
and saw this.
what could have caused this?
I was thinking about adding posi so is this a big deal?

looks like the pinion slid into the carrier and chewed it up. this would have granaded the ring/pinion and side gears but the housing survived and they just reused the carrier. seen something similar to this before when a buddy jumped his truck and was running a solid drive shaft. once the suspension bottomed out something had to give. it wasn't pretty.

It doesnt look like a stock carrier with the ribs on the end.

I had the pinion nut come undone on my Suburban, but it got me 60 miles, noisily, to the house. The carrier had a similarly customized look to it when I yanked the cover.

if the ring gear grenaded
would there be marks or dents inside the housing?

most likely, especially the cover. they dont crumble softly when they come apart.
