Question Engine Rebuild?

If I wanted to rebuild my '69 Chevy 350 to nothing more than a very durable stock motor for a daily driver, who would you recommend as a good vendor for parts and/or a rebuild kit? Having looked over kits from vendors such as Summit, I noticed that there are a lot of choices based on such things as very tiny measurements. How can I be sure that whichever I choose is not to wild. Yes, I do intend on getting several rebuild books for my birthday and christmas. Any suggestions on certain choice parts are very welcome! Thanx guys!

Re: Engine Rebuild?

The rebuild kit for my 400 sbc came from Northern Auto Parts and I have heard good things about them. You should post this over in the engine section for more responses.

Re: Engine Rebuild?

That, and you wont know what over sized pistons and rings you will need, or which under sized crank and rod bearings you might need until the machine shop is done with it.

Oversized? Undersized? Sounds like Goldilocks and the three bears. I'm hoping my rebuild book will explain.

Re: Engine Rebuild?

If they need to bore the cylinders, the new pistons and rings will need to be slightly larger. Typical over-bore on a 350 .030", so the pistons and rings you would buy would need to be .030 over. When the crank's rod and main bearings are turned, the journals will now be smaller, hence "under-sized" bearings.

It's pretty straight forward to rebuild a small block, just pay attention to the details and you will be fine. Everyone that has rebuilt one has done it at least once the first time.
