Question regarding tailgate band

I would like to replace the woodgrain tape on my GMC tailgate band with the replacement tape I've seen advertised. Anyone try this? How did you remove the old woodgrain tape... mine is cracked and peeling? Does the replacement tape look/work good? Also, the GMC letters look like the're held on with rivets. Once I drill the rivets to remove the letters, how do I reattach them after installing the new tape? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Question regarding tailgate band

pop the letters out with a pumch slightly smaller than rivets.
use a razor blade and mmm general adhesive remover to remove tape.
use steel wool dipped in laquer thinner to remove all black paint and shine entire peice.
mask off and repaint what was black originally whatever color you desire.
remove masking tape and install woodgrain sticker. note home depot sells a huge roll of shelf paper that will last forever. cut it oversized and trim to fit after sticking it to panel.
use steel wool to polish your letters. now test fit them back into original holes. remove them and apply speringly some mmm plastick and emblem adhesive to the back of letters and resnap them in.now mix you some automotive clearcoat and spray a couple of coats over entire trim.
after drying it should look as good as new. now you will probably want to do all your lower trim.
1 pc of caution dont use spray can clear as it is cloudy and will look loke dog dookie

Re: Question regarding tailgate band

I've used the woodgrain tape for my lower trim and it looks great and is holding up well after two years so far.

Re: Question regarding tailgate band

I used a heat gun to peel the tape off of my son's tailgate band and cleaned up the residue with mineral spirits. The letters almost fell off as the riveted parts were corroded.

I repainted the black stripes, replaced the tape, and installed new letters as the old ones were not reusable.

Here is a pic of the results.
