Re: How far have you gone...

My Sons 67 CST was at a gas station about a mile up the street, the guy found this one about 75 miles away I guess, I have since seen him have other stuff for sale, but nothing worth buying on the spot and getting in trouble for.

my Sub was about 4 miles away. that guy has a few other vehicles also.

Winter salt wagon Landcruiser was on a for sale by owner lot 2 miles away.

BUT, .. now that I have a 50 ish gallon tank Sub I may go down south with a light aluminum car trailer and look around. hmmmm Arizona ? we'll see, Time and financial reality will decide that.

Re: How far have you gone...

I bought my first 67 truck in anderson, south carolina. Drove from Houston to Anderson 15 hours one way. 17 hours back home. Then when I bought my red 68 I was training for a fight, running by the house and saw this truck on my running route. He drove it to my house for me.

Re: How far have you gone...

My ex-brother-in-law was doing my ex-mother-in-law a favor and selling an '82 Nissan Sentra to my younger daughter. He had a wrecking yard in Cumby, TX and I had to drive to Texarkana, AR and pick it up. Didn't look bad. As I drove it back to Benton (about 120 miles) I learned that it would not stay in 5-th gear, unless you wrapped a leg around the shifter. I still had to use the gas pedal. I have big feet and there's not enough room to juggle all that leather in that small area. Suffice it to say that I left it parked at my ex-mother-in-law's house until my ex-brother-in-law came to take it back to TX. My ex-MIL was PO'd that I would snub the offer of a car for such a low price of $750. This was in '94.

Re: How far have you gone...

I bought mine '68 stepside off ebay from what I thought was Paducah KY (About 95 miles away). I got directions and found out it was about 15-20 OTHER side of Paducah. When I got there the truck was another 10 miles away in Bandana. I didn't think we would EVER get there. We pulled it onto the trailer with a tractor, I robbed (not really the guy helped take them off) the doors off another truck ('68 GMC) that he was hauling to scrap (If I had room I'd taken more of it), and homeward I went through the back roads of Far Western KY...no banjo music thats eastern KY.

I Paid $400 for a '76 Cutlass, Drove from Western KY to Charlotte, NC (~550 miles) to get it...pulled it home over the mountains...robbed the engine, trans, shifter, wheels, tires...sold it for $350!

Re: How far have you gone...

Well, other than the '67 Panel from Joe Lopez (Joes67) in Michigan, I would have to say the FOUR trips to Glen Burnie MD to get the first Burb. (68) First trip, went to check it out and pay. Second trip, left with the S-10 to pick up the DOLLY in VA from Dad, then up to MD to tow the S-10 home with the Burb. Couldn't get it safe enough to drive, let alone TOW the S-10, so we left the dolly with the Burb and went home to get a BIGGER truck. Wound up borrowing an '86 K-10 for the THIRD trip, back to MD hooked it up, flew down the road. At about SEVENTY mph (at NIGHT), the Burb decides to turn into a Bucking Bronco, bounced one of the safety chains right OFF. Decided to wait til daytime and try again. Got to Orleans MD, and realized the K-10 was NOT gonna make it. Left the Burb in MD. Got the K-10 almost home, when the TH400 bought the farm. Paid $600 to buy one for my buddy. A week later, bought him a $300 NP208 also. The next week boardmember Chevydad (Bill) and I took his Hemi Dodge and trailer down and drug it back. Spent more money to get it back than I did for the $1200 BURB! What a NIGHTMARE!

Right around 160 miles to get my Shortbed 4X4. I pulled a trailer about 360 miles round trip to pick up a '67 GTO I bought out of the woods of West By God Virginia.

I drove mine 32 miles with expired plates to park it at my parents house before it got picked up for the 920 mile trip (trailer) to LA where it was put into a container for the 10,084 miles to Nurnberg, Germany.

Re: How far have you gone...

I took the Greyhound up to Flin Flon from Winnipeg (10hrs) & drove my red 67 back 500 miles. It died in front of my house! I pushed in the clutch & it rolled into the yard safe & sound. It had a plugged fuel filter to to a rusty gas tank. The Dubies hooked me up with that truck & they very kindly helped me out that day. They took good care of me! Thanx again Dubies!

Re: How far have you gone...

750 miles for me. Bought the motorhome, filled it up with a whack load of parts, and started the journey back from Puyallup WA to Calgary AB. Had a Onan generator as my co pilot, 18" Billet specialties as my bed partner for a night, even had beer in the fridge(leftover from the night before). Did this trip in March, will no tools for most of the way, 15 fuel filters later, and yes I would do it again.

Longhorn, its going to be a trip to remember, and you are going to meet people in the strangest places all with different stories about these old trucks.

Good luck with the trip, and good luck with the new project.

Darren

Re: How far have you gone...

I had a car that wouldn't stay in fourth (no 5th on it) so I just put a big rubber band on the shifter and tied it to the seat... first to second shifts were awsome, I'd nail the clutch at 4500 (it was a 4 cylinder Citation) and it would instantly pop into second... was cooler than anything you'd seen. While if wouldn't sift like that into 4th, it did hold it there while I drove.

Dude, I know what that's like, I drove my sisters nissan from Myrtle Beach, SC to Miami one summer about 15 years or so ago. Her ac was broke, and it would not stay in 4th gear. I think I took a shoelace out to keep it in gear, it was hot and it stormed about 500 miles out of the 750 or so miles it took to get home.
Never again.

Re: How far have you gone...

I did a 200 miler -- not much, i know, but the tires were so out of balance it shattered the side quarter glass(blazer) -- that was not a fun drive and the first stop was Sams for a new set of tires when i got back to town

Re: How far have you gone...

I bought my GMC sight unseen off of eBay, it was in St. Paul, Minnesota, took the Greyhound up there with my dad. The guy that sold it to us met us at the Greyhound station with the GMC on a trailer. He asked where our truck was, and thought we were crazy for attempting to drive it home (he had used it on his farm). oh yeah, it was February and through most of Indiana and Ohio on the way back, there was a gigantic blizzard. Got to test the 4 wheel drive on the roads, 'twas a blast.

The only other car I saw on the road that wasn't crashed into a ditch was the cop that pulled me over 5 minutes from my house

While he had me pulled over, the fuse blew for the brake, tail, and dash lights. It was the only incident we had.

Re: How far have you gone...

Saw my 86 in autotrader a little north of Atlanta, the guy wanted too much. A friend of mine outside of Atlanta said he would go by and look at it, he called me and said, if you don't buy it I will! Initially I decided I was NOT going to buy it.
After about 5 weeks of negotiations through email, we decided on a price.
Flew up there on a Saturday, stayed the night at my friends house, and drove it home Sunday. Maybe 400 miles or so.

I bought a '64 Bonneville ragtop when I came home from Taiwan in July of '69. It was bought new (special order) from the Bobcat GTO dealer in Michigan. I was in Arkansas. The Poncho didn't have A/C. Didn't matter to me.

Then I drove it to Tucson. Yeah, it was a dry heat, but it was still hot!!!! I looked at a new VW in late '70 and was told that I would have to pay a wrecking yard to take the car without an A/C unit. Geeze, whodathunk that?

Top down....who needs an air condtioner? Black leather/Honduras Maroon paint.....did I mention it was hot in Tucson??

This sounds like an adventure I`d like to be a part of,assuming you`d want a shotgun rider.Too bad I couldn`t even consider it during my son`s school year.I`d make a good can popper/crusher while you drove.
