Re: How far have you gone...
Well I drove home when I got my project. I just didnt drive the 68. I went about 25 miles twice to get it. It came home on two different trailer loads. Then I went a little over 100 miles to get a 72 parts truck. Again trailered home. Just one trip that time though.

I took the Amtrak down to San Diego to check a truck out. Ended up driving it home that evening, about a hundred miles...

Re: How far have you gone...
About 450 miles. From Celina Tn. to Arcanum Ohio, In the spring of 2001
I was looking for a mid 50's 1/2 ton Chevy when I picked up the Nashville Truck Trader and saw a 1970C10 CST with a 402BB, AC, Buckets, Tach, 400 Turbo Auto, Two Tone paint, Tinted Windows, etc. The price was $2400. I had read about the 67-72 trucks so I knew this was a special truck. That was Thursday night and I called and the guy owned was selling the truck owned a car recycling business and he was closed but he said come on out. I did and I bought the truck. He later told me he had almost two dozen calls the next two nights asking about my truck. I came back a couple weeks later with my son and he followed me to the first gas station and then starter went out. I left the truck while they searched for a used starter and we came back to pick up my truck a week later. We started out and about 75 miles from home the alternator went out. We made it home and for the most part my truck has been in storage. My wife jokes that the only time she sees my truck running is when it behind a tow truck. Well this fall we start the resto of my Lean Mean Non-Running Green Machine. Now you know the rest of the story. Lets hear some more stories.

Re: How far have you gone...
My trip home was somewhere between 3.5 & 4 miles. I drove by it on my way to work everyday, and watched as the price dropped from $2800.00 to $1800.00. Then, it disappeared. I found the phone number 2 months later and figured I'd give him a call. Sure enough, it was still for sale and he was desperate, he was buying his first house and was a little short for closing. I bought it for $1500.00! The drive home, although short, was an adventure, it was pouring rain and the wipers didn't work! They were the first thing I fixed.

Re: How far have you gone...
So you're gonna do it huh? And if you take the recommended route, you'll be coming through not terribly far from here. Of course, you'll probably come through on a Sunday evening or during the week sometime
I went about 5 blocks to pick up the 68, and about 4 miles to get the 67 panel that I used to have.

Re: How far have you gone...
About 8 miles across town for my K20 that I drove home, but I just drove 200 miles to pick up a C20 parts truck that I had to trailer home. My fun is just getting started. I have begun the disassembly of the K20 and will be doing a body off restoration/upgrade this winter (and maybe longer ).

Re: How far have you gone...
farthest was a few hundred but I can honestly say I would drive to Cal or Ariz to buy a good one. No matter how far, rust free(ish) is always worth it

Re: How far have you gone...
My uncle drove my 67 up to NY from Columbia, SC, about 725 miles back in '96, I then convinced him to leave it up there with me
I then had the same uncle trailer it down for me in January '03 from NY to SC, 725 miles. I have yet to do it yet, but I have taken my truck on 400+ mile round trips MANY times. Maybe someday I'll be taking another one home...

Re: How far have you gone...
I bought an ocre burb about 40 miles away from here. The guy said the previous owner drove it all over the western states pulling a small travel trailer. He then proceeded to tell me he wouldn't have any problems driving it from here to Cali and back as she sits....Luckily I had a large jug of water with me (overheating/leaking radiator). We had to make three stops on the way home to fill er up. I put a new radiator and new hoses in. Havent had any overheat problems at all since then...Next stop OHIO???

Re: How far have you gone...
I drove my burb from Taft CA to White Rock (1200 miles) which is just across the border. Paid 6k for mine, the owner changed all the hoses and belts recharged the 134a, and pressure tested the cooling sys. the wife and I had a blast on the trip home. the biggest problem was the airlines miss-placed my 60lb. tool box in LA. would do it again, great memories.
I'll come down for the party. CG what is the date and times and directions to the swap meet? thx |

1600 miles from Springdale AR back to San Diego in a 59 Apache. To be honest I had a great time, but I wouldn't do it again.

Re: How far have you gone...
My step dad had died and I went to Atlanta to help my Mom pack things up, clean out their house and move some stuff up to Madisville TN. Well there was a nonrunning 71 LWB, sitting in the garage and she was worried about having to get it running to be able to sell it. I told her I wish I had a way to get it home, cause I would love to have it. That night while we were sitting around reminiscing about things, she asked me if I really wanted the truck. I told her yes I would love to have it. Mom said, find a way to get it home and it's yours. well during the night she offered me a whole lot of other stuff that was there, and what was going to be a small U-haul trip with stuff in it up to Madisonville (@ 200 miles), and then a plane ride home. Turns into a 26 foot U-haul truck and a car trailer trip of @ 1200 miles. I didn't drive it home, but that was one trip that I'll never forget. Nonstop from TN to TX in 20 hrs. It took me about 6 or 8 hrs and a rebuilt carb to get it running after I got home.
