just bought my first c-10

Hello, I am new here. I just bought a 69 cst-10 truck. Truck is in ok shape. Motor is a little tired. I want to make sure that this truck is safe to drive first. I already checked and replaced brakes. I am into Pontiacs and this is my first chevy. I am not to consern with drivetrain because it will have a pontiac 455 soon. Any problems with front suspension and what to look for? It's all original with 92k miles. Thanks

Ya...you definately scored big time. With it being that original, why put in the 455?

Re: just bought my first c-10

Thank you for comments guys. I am almost done. I had to replace heads and cam. It's 9:1 comp now. Still might be too high. Do you guys know what stock stall converter rated at and gear ratio for the 12 bolt rear? I will reuse chevy trans. I ordered trans adapt plate from jegs. I should be done in 2 weeks. Here are couple pics. First one is the mess that came with the truck. Thanks

Re: just bought my first c-10

Thats a clean Poncho motor there, but with only 92k on that truck, the motor should not be too tired unless the PO ran around with the air cleaner off like in the pic.
An hour with a fistful of plugs, wires and a new hei, along with some timing light magic would probably do wonders

It looks better than ok to me. Unless it's got hidden rust and bucket full of body filler... 455 Indian power too!

Re: just bought my first c-10

To answer your question about the front end. If you plan on driving the truck much I would upgrade to front disc brakes if it hasn't already been done. I think the front suspension on these trucks is good. Usually check the tie rod ends, idler arms, and the upper and lower ball joints for excessive play.

Nice clean truck

Re: just bought my first c-10

being that your truck is an automatic, it should have the 3.07 gear in it unless it was optioned otherwise. As you know, a 455 loves gears like that.
I say go for it on the engine swap. The easiest way would be to go get some engine stands from a 73 - 87 chevy 2 wheel drive, they are very flat and dirt cheap. (my truck had a pontiac 350 in it when i first got it, but I went with a cad engine) I don't know what hoses he had, but the rad was the stock chevy unit (350 small block was stock in my truck) With the starter on the oposite side, you could just get a long battery cable, but in my opinion, you'd be better off locating an Aux battery tray out of an other truck. They were semi common in longhorns, and custom camper trucks, and then the large trucks with built up campers would be fairly likely to have it too.

Welcome to the board!
And I agree with the rest... that is a real sweet looking survivor there.

Nice lookin' truck! The rockers and cab corners even look pretty good in the picture.

I would definitely do the disc upgrade.

And show us some pics after you drop that 455 in.

That is a very nice 69cst! It's amazing because when I was young I absolutly hated the olive green colors now that I have a two-tone Olive Green 70cst...&...I find those colors pleasing to the eyes. Maybe it's an old age thing. Great find and make that truck your truck. I have had my truck for about six years and I finally have the funds to do a resto.
Long live the CST's!!!

Re: just bought my first c-10

Being that you are a Pontiyakker, you may know that GMC used Pontiac engines for many years. My '38 GMC had a flathead Pontiac in it. Until GMC came out with the V-6 in '60, Pontiac was the big engine.

So putting a Pontiac engine in these trucks isn't out of line. A 455 hooked to a TH400 will be sweet. I'm an ex-Pontiyakker and no longer own any. I liked them, up until the energy crisis of '73 made the gummint act even more to make me not like what we had to choose from.

Welcome from Arkansas. Good luck on your project. Looks like you are well on your way.

Re: just bought my first c-10

I had a GMC with a pontiac 455 in int and in order for it to mount up the PO cut the frame in order to clearance the oil filter, just an FYI but they make a relocater kit for that application so you don't have to cut the frame.
